Mera peak climbing is an unforgettable experience in the Everest region. The journey to the summit is full of challenges and adventures but also filled with breathtaking views and a sense of accomplishment that cannot be matched. Mera peak is the highest trekking peak in Nepal, situated in the Hinku valley of the Everest region. Mera peak climbing is technically easy and recommended to beginner climbers.
Mera peak climbing is also an excellent acclimatization peak for those planning to climb Mount Everest or any of the major peaks in the Khumbu Region. The Mera peak climbing route follows an off-the-beaten-path into the rarely-visited Hinku Valley. So, the trail is less crowded. The trail is secluded, and the area is wild and pristine, with very few human settlements. Throughout the trek, you will be surrounded by stunning scenery, including soaring peaks, vast glaciers, and rugged terrain. You will pass through.
Most nights during the trekking period are spent sleeping at tea houses located in isolated Kharkas or summer camps of yak herders. This unique aspect of the Mera peak climbing provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and experience the true essence of the Nepalese Himalayas. All in all, the 15-day Mera peak climbing itinerary is an incredible adventure that will leave you with unforgettable memories and a newfound appreciation for the beauty of the Himalayas.
Our adventure to conquer Mera peak began with a journey through the remote and rugged region of Panch Pokhari, situated in the Hinku valley until we reached Khare. In order to make the summit day more manageable and enjoyable, we strategically chose to set up our high camp at 5,780 meters (18,964 ft) on a rocky shelf positioned behind a large vertical rock that offered some degree of shelter from the elements.
The view from our Mera High Camp is absolutely breathtaking, arguably one of the best panoramic vistas of its kind. At the Mera peak summit, we will be surrounded by stunning peaks and glaciers that stretch out as far as the eye could see, creating a truly awe-inspiring atmosphere. The summit of Mera peak offers a breathtaking panorama of Everest (8,849 m/29,032 ft), Lhotse (8,516 m/27,940 ft, Kanchenjunga (8,586 m/28,169 ft), Cho Oyu (8,188 m/26,864 ft), and Makalu (8,463 m/27,766 ft).

Further, we will walk through lush rhododendron forests, crossing Handi Khola on the way. Passing by small settlements and forested trails, we will reach Chutanga to spend the night.
We leave Chutanga early in the morning after a big breakfast. Today, we will be crossing the Zwatra La pass that separates the Khumbu valley & Hinku valley. The trail gradually ascends to the top of the pass, where we will stop for a while to take pictures and savor the mountain view. From the pass, it is a rocky descent to Thuli Kharka. Thuki Kharka is a big meadow surrounded by grass, shrubs, and boulders. This place is used by yak herders as a camp. There are a few teahouses to cater to the trekkers.
From Thuli Kharka, the trail descends to Kothe. The trail offers superb views of Hinku valley, Kusum Kanguru, Peak 43, and the south face of Mera Peak. We will trek through dense forests of pine and rhododendron. On the way, we also get to see birds and wildlife. The trail passes by remote settlements, crossing suspension bridges.
From Kothe, we will ascend to the Upper Hinku valley. As the elevation rises, the treeline disappears, and there are no major villages further on the way. We will only see meadows and grazing sites. We will take a small break at Gondishung for tea and refreshments. Mountains like Mera peak. Kusum Kanguru, Thamserku, and Charpati Himal are seen along the way. We will visit the Lungdsumba Gompa. It is a 200 years old Buddhist shrine. From the gompa, Thaknak is situated one hour away. The view of Charpati Himal is outstanding from Thaknak.
Today, we will be trekking to Khare, which is also known as the Mera Peak base camp. Leaving Thaknak, the trail gradually ascends the Dig Glacier and goes past the Charpati Tal, a glacial lake. From Dig Glacier, we will drop down to Dig Kharka, enjoying stunning views of snow-capped mountains. Further, we will ascend the Hinku Nup and Shar glaciers. From here, the trail finally goes to Khare. Situated at the foot of Mera peak, Khare is the base camp with a couple of teahouses and climbing gear shops.
We take an acclimatization break at Khare. Today, we have a very exciting day ahead of us. The team leader will give us pre-climbing training that will help us boost our confidence. You will get to check your climbing skills and learn new ones. The climbing training involves ascending and descending using a harness and other climbing gear. You will learn to make knots and belay & rappel. We will do the final gear check and prepare our bags for the summit day.
Leaving the Mera Peak base camp (Khare), we will climb on a steep and rocky track to Mera La. The route offers breathtaking views of Mera South, Mera North, and Mera Central. The route from Mera base camp ascends to Mera Glacier, and we gradually climb towards the Mera High Camp. As there are almost zero technical sections, the climbing is straightforward on thick snow.
However, the high altitude and strong wind & extreme cold make climbing physically very demanding. We will set the tents upon reaching the Mera High Camp. The supporting crew will brew hot drinks for us and prepare meals. We will spend the remaining day resting and preparing for the summit push.
Today, we will leave Mera High Camp at 2:00 AM in the morning. We will use our headlamps. The guide and supporting crew will secure the ropes. We will first cross the Mera glacier and gradually climb. The cold air and low oxygen will slow us down, but we will keep pushing.
The final 40-50 meters before the summit is the most challenging part of the climb. It is a steep incline that we climb using fixed rope and jumars and ascend to the snow dome of the Mera central summit.
We will reach the summit before 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Once we reach the top of Mera Central, we will get to witness a jaw-dropping panorama of the Himalayan mountains, including Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Gaurishanker, Baruntse, Chamlang, and many others.
After reaching the summit, we will enjoy the view for a while and then retrace back to Mera High Camp. From the high camp, we will trek back to Khare to spend the night. We will also clean the high camp before leaving it.
As we have completed Mera peak climbing, it is now time we trek back to Lukla. From Khare, we will descend to Kothe. After around three hours of trekking on the rugged path, Thaknak arrives. And from here, we trek down to Kothe to spend the night. The landscapes along the way are excellent. It is a short trek from Khare to Kothe, so we will get plenty of time to rest.
We leave Kothe early in the morning after a delicious breakfast. The trail continues through dense forests and further goes along the western section of Hinku valley to Thuli Kharka, where we will be spending the night. The view of all three Mera tops is wonderful from this place.
The trail crosses the Zwatra La pass once again. Leaving Thuli Kharka, we ascend along a rocky path to the top of the pass that offers breathtaking mountain views. From the pass, we drop down to Kalo Himal ridge, covered with prayer flags and stones. From here, trek on a downhill trail. Trekking past pastures and rhododendron forests, we reach Chutanga.
After breakfast, we begin trekking back to Lukla. We leave Chutanga early and begin trekking through lush forests and fields. The trail crosses suspension bridges and lovely streams. On the way, we will trek past some small villages. In Lukla, we will celebrate our successful climbing and have a small party.
