Detail About Lobuche Peak Climbing

Lobuche peak climbing is a perfect adventure in the eastern Himalayas of Nepal. Standing at 6,119 meters (20,075 ft), the Lobuche peak is an extraordinary trekking peak that welcomes beginner climbers to test their endurance and climbing skills. Lobuche peak climbing is quite popular and a nontechnical mountain, which makes it an ideal first Himalayan peak attempt.

Our Lobuche peak climbing 22 days package includes a trek to Everest base camp and also ascends to Cho La pass, from where the trail continues to the Lobuche peak base camp. In the first 11 days, you will follow the famous EBC trek route and pass by picturesque Sherpa villages. The trekking part is essential for beginner climbers to acclimatize to the elevation. If you are a seasoned climber, you can opt for a direct helicopter flight from Lukla to Lobuche village and begin climbing right away.

Lobuche has two summits- Lobuche East and Lobuche West. We’ll climb Lobuche East, which is known as a trekking peak. Lobuche West is very technical and known as an expedition peak. Located between Cho La pass and Everest base camp, Lobuche east route has fewer technical sections and more steep snowy slopes. Even though the technical difficulties are minor on Lobuche east route, the journey demands a high level of cardiovascular fitness.

The journey begins with a thrilling Lukla flight (2,846 m/9,337 ft). From here, we descend to Phakding village (2,610 m/8,563 ft) and follow a forested trail to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,290 ft). We have an acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche (4,410 m/14,470 ft). The trail drops down to Phunki Thanga and ascends to Tengboche village (3,860 m/12,660 ft). From here, we will trek through Debuche and Pangboche villages to Dingboche.

From Dingboche, the treeline gets sparse, and we trek along the Khumbu glacier moraine to Lobuche village (4,940 m/16,210 ft). Passing by memorial cairns, we will trek to Gorak Shep (5,164 m/16,942 ft) and continue to Everest base camp (5,364 m/17,598 ft). After a short excursion of Kala Patthar (5,644 m/18,519 ft), descend to Dzongla (4,800 m/15,748 ft), from where we head to Cho La pass (5,420 m/17,782 ft).

The trail then ascends to Lobuche peak base camp (4,950 m/16,240 ft), and climbing via high camp (5,300 m/17,388 ft), we will aim for the east summit of Lobuche peak. Along the way, we will get to witness several alpine flora and fauna. The Lobuche peak climbing route offers diverse landscapes. Dense forests open up to pastures and glacier moraines.

Mountains like Everest (8,849 m/29,032 ft), Makalu (8,481 m/27,825 ft), Kanchenjunga (8,586 m/28,169 ft), Lhotse (8,516 m/27,940 ft), Pumori (7,161 m/23,494 ft), Ama Dablam (6,812 m/22,349 ft), Thamserku (6,608 m/21,680 ft), Nuptse (7,861 m/25,791 ft), and numerous others are seen during the Lobuche peak climbing 22 days.

Lobuche peak climbing with Everest base camp trek

Our Lobuche peak climbing 22 days itinerary treks to Everest base camp and Kala Patthar before starting the climbing. You will also ascend to Cho La pass. Before you will reach Lobuche peak base camp, you will spend 11 days trekking and acclimatizing. The trekking part of the venture lets you explore the lush rhododendron forests and beautiful villages of the Khumbu region.

You will experience the mountain lifestyle and visit ancient monasteries & stupas. Meet with locals and famous Sherpas. Get to see their lifestyle and culture. The trek lets you understand the mountain community and the mountains themselves. You will also come across rich flora and fauna.

Add the Gokyo Lakes excursion to the itinerary

Gokyo Lakes are high-altitude alpine freshwater lakes situated from 4,700-5,000 meters. There are six Gokyo Lakes all of which are interconnected by streams and form a stunning turquoise-blue color against the dramatic backdrop of the Himalayas. The Gokyo village is located at the bank of Dudh Pokhari. If you have 4-5 days extra to explore, we highly recommend adding Gokyo Lakes to your Lobuche peak climbing itinerary.

Pre-climbing training

Before attempting to climb Lobuche Peak, it is essential to have the proper training and preparation. We provide our clients with pre-climbing training at the base camp, led by our experienced mountain guides. The pre-climbing training typically takes place at Lobuche base camp and covers a range of topics, including mountaineering techniques, acclimatization, safety procedures, and equipment use.

Our guides have extensive experience climbing in the Himalayas and are skilled in teaching these essential skills to clients. The training typically starts with an introduction to the climbing equipment that will be used, such as crampons, ice axes, ropes, and harnesses. Clients will learn how to properly use and maintain this equipment, as well as how to pack and organize their gear for the climb.

The guides will also teach essential mountaineering skills, such as how to climb on steep snow and ice, how to ascend and descend using ropes, and how to navigate through challenging terrain. Clients will have the opportunity to practice these skills in a controlled environment, such as a nearby glacier or icefall.

Lobuche peak climbing emergency and evacuation

Safety is our foremost priority during Lobuche peak climbing. While we take every precaution to ensure a successful and safe climb, emergencies can happen. So, we have a well-established plan in place for emergencies and evacuations.

In the event of an emergency, our experienced guides and support staff are trained to handle a range of medical and safety issues. We have a comprehensive first aid kit on hand, and our guides are trained in wilderness first aid. If necessary, we can arrange medical evacuation via helicopter from the nearest accessible location.

For non-life-threatening emergencies, we have a system in place to communicate with our support team in Kathmandu, who can arrange for emergency supplies or equipment to be sent to our team on the mountain.

If there is a more severe crisis or injury, such as altitude sickness or a climbing accident, our team will assess the situation and determine the best course of action. This may involve arranging for a helicopter evacuation or organizing a rescue mission with the help of local authorities.

*Note: Emergency evacuation costs are covered by your travel insurance. We use the documents to provide you with the service.

Lobuche peak location and climbing history

Lobuche peak is a mountain located in the Khumbu region of Nepal, in the Sagarmatha National Park. It has two main peaks, Lobuche East (6,119m) and Lobuche West (6,145m).

The first recorded ascent of Lobuche East was made by Laurence Nielson and Sherpa Ang Gyalzen on April 25, 1984. The first ascent of Lobuche West was made on April 20, 1955, by Jean Couzy and Lionel Terray of a French expedition team.

We’ll climb Lobuche's east peak in this package, which is known as the trekking peak. The ascent of Lobuche East involves a steep climb up to a ridge, followed by a narrow snow and ice climb to the summit. Lobuche West, on the other hand, is a more challenging climb with a steep snow and ice face that requires advanced mountaineering skills.

Distance & terrain

The standard climbing route starts from the town of Lukla and follows the trekking route to Everest Base Camp. From there, climbers ascend to Cho La pass and to Lobuche Base Camp, which is located at an altitude of around 4,900 meters. The distance from Lukla to Lobuche Base Camp is around 65 kilometers.

The Lobuche East peak climbing involves trekking on a well-defined trail for the first part of the journey, which gradually becomes steeper and rockier as you approach the peak. The climb involves a combination of trekking, scrambling, and mountaineering on snow and ice. The final section to the summit is a steep snow and ice climb, which requires the use of crampons and ice axes.
