The last forbidden kingdom- Lo Manthang

Lo Manthang is a remote town located in the Upper Mustang region of Nepal, nestled in the Himalayan Mountains. It is the capital of the former Kingdom of Lo and is known for its rich cultural heritage and stunning landscape. Lo Manthang is also called the "Forbidden Kingdom," as it was once a restricted area and was opened to foreigners only in 1992.

The town is surrounded by a high wall made of mud and stone, which was built in the 14th century to protect the city from invaders. The wall is about 1.5 kilometers long and is punctuated by four gates, which face each of the cardinal directions.

Inside the town, there are several important cultural and religious landmarks, including the King's Palace, which was built in the 15th century and served as the residence of the King of Mustang until the monarchy was abolished in 2008. The palace has unique architecture, which combines Tibetan and Nepalese styles. Some of the notable monasteries are Namgyal Gompa, Nyuphu monastery, and Thupchen Gompa.

Explore the hidden world of the ancient Buddhist kingdom

The people of Upper Mustang have a rich cultural heritage that is closely tied to their environment and their Buddhist faith. The region was once a part of the Tibetan Empire, and as a result, the culture and traditions of the people of Upper Mustang are heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhism.

One of the most distinctive features of the culture of Upper Mustang is the architecture of the villages. The villages are built in a unique style with flat roofs, narrow alleys, and mud-brick houses that are adorned with intricate carvings and paintings. The buildings are often decorated with Buddhist motifs, such as mantras, mandalas, and prayer flags.

Upper Mustang is home to numerous monasteries, temples, and chortens, which serve as centers of religious and cultural life. The locals follow a unique blend of Tibetan Buddhism and Bon, the traditional religion of Tibet. They believe in reincarnation, karma, and the power of prayer and offerings to appease the gods and spirits.

Tiji is one of the major festivals celebrated by the locals. You can check out our Tiji festival trek package for more information.

Trek in the rain shadow of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges

Upper Mustang is a region in northern Nepal that lies in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. A rain shadow is a dry area on the downwind side of a mountain range that receives little rainfall due to the mountains blocking the moisture-carrying winds from reaching the region.

The Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges are among the highest peaks in the world, with Annapurna I standing at 8,091 meters and Dhaulagiri I at 8,167 meters. As such, they create a significant rain shadow effect, which has made Upper Mustang one of the driest regions in Nepal.

The unique climatic conditions of Upper Mustang have resulted in a landscape that is unlike any other in Nepal. The region is characterized by vast expanses of barren hills, canyons, and valleys that are dotted with small villages and ancient monasteries. The terrain is offbeat, and the vegetation is sparse, with only a few hardy species able to survive in the harsh environment.

Being in the rain shadow area, the Upper Mustang trek welcomes trekkers in the monsoon season too. You can trek from June to August when almost all trekking routes in Nepal are affected by heavy rainfall.

Explore sky caves and centuries-old monasteries during acclimatization days in Lo Manthang

Chhoser Cave

The Chhoser cave is a remarkable collection of around 10,000 man-made caves situated on the cliffs near Lo-Manthang. The caves are dug into the valley walls and have provided a mystical charm to the area. The site has been listed as a UNESCO tentative site since 1996. The Chhoser cave has had multiple uses throughout history.

The earliest use was as burial chambers, followed by living quarters for safety in the 10th century. By the 1400s, caves were being used as military lookouts, storage units, and meditation chambers. Human remains, partially mummified and with cut marks on the bones, have been found in the cave.

These remains date back to the introduction of Buddhism in Mustang and are believed to be related to the Bon religion, which practices sky burial. Additionally, artifacts from the 12th and 14th centuries have been found, including ancient Buddhist decorative art and paintings, pottery, and precious manuscripts containing writings from both Buddhism and Bon.

The Jhong caves are among the most noteworthy, featuring five stories built on a cliff with 40 rooms that can be reached by climbing steep stairs. These caves have also enabled advanced tantric yoga and Tummo, a form of Tibetan breathing that allows for heat generation at high altitudes.

Luri Gumba

Luri Gumba is an ancient monastery associated with the Nyingma Kargyupa Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It is located near Yara village beyond the walled city of Lo-Manthang in Nepal. The monastery is estimated to be around 700 years old and is taken care of by Yara villagers. The Gumba is situated 100 meters high above the ground and is supported by natural sandstone structures.

The Luri Gumba consists of two interconnecting chambers, the outer chamber of which houses shrines, while the inner chamber boasts stunning mural paintings of Mahasiddhas, who are saints that have achieved enlightenment. The monastery also contains chortens, mandala paintings, and Buddhist deity statues.

Luri Gumba can only be accessed through a dirt trail and requires climbing a wooden ladder to access the lower caves. Monks have living quarters in separate caves nearby. On the way to Luri Gumba, visitors can also see another Gumba called Tashi Kabum, which is almost identical to Luri Gumba but less ornate and less preserved.

Ghar Gumba

Ghar Gumba is an ancient monastery located at an altitude of 3,931 meters in the Upper Mustang. It is the oldest monastery in the region and was built in the 8th century by Guru Padmasambhava, who is considered the second Buddha in Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery is related to the Nyingma sect of Buddhism and is still active today, providing spiritual guidance to the local community.

Ghar Gumba is a testament to the rich history and culture of Tibetan Buddhism in Upper Mustang and continues to be an essentially religious and cultural site in the region. Visitors can experience a spiritual journey while enjoying the natural beauty of the area.

Major festivals celebrated in Upper Mustang

 Tiji Festival

The Tiji festival is also known as the Tenchi festival. It is an annual celebration held in the Lo-Manthang city of Upper Mustang. The festival's main purpose is to celebrate the victory of good over evil and to pray for world peace. The festival is marked with traditional Tibetan songs and dances, colorful custom dresses, and chanting mantras. It is celebrated over three days in the fifth month of the Tibetan calendar, usually following mid-May.

On the first day of the festival, local monks and performers head to the square in the King's palace from the monastery, and the festival begins with the masked dance "Tsa Chaam," which tells the story of Dorje Jono's victory over evil. On the second day, the monks perform the "Nga Cham" dance, which portrays Dorje Jono's attempt to return the demon to the Buddha realm.

The third and final day features the masked dance "Rha Chaam," which highlights the end of evil, and the festival concludes with a closing ceremony where all performers come together to perform more dances and songs and shoot guns. The monk throws a puppet made from barley representing the demon.

Yartung Mela (Horse Festival)

Yartung Mela is a famous festival celebrated in Upper Mustang, which marks the end of the summer and the harvesting season. The festival is celebrated for three days. It involves various activities such as horse riding, archery, football competition, singing, dancing, and drinking.

Offerings to Buddha are made during the festival, and blessings from seniors are received. The festival is celebrated on the full moon of August each year, and the date is set by the Lama, a senior priest keeping in mind the completion of harvesting crops. The festival includes a procession to Khimkar, Jharkot, and Ranipauwa. And each day, there are festivities.

The festival begins with a short ceremony in Lo Manthang, and each day has its own significance. The first day is for the King's activities, the second day is for the monks, and the third day is for the locals who participate in celebratory activities. One of the main attractions of the festival is the horse race competition by men and women.

The riders perform various feats of skill across the field, such as scooping up Tibetan blessing scarves from the ground or throwing rocks at a stationary target. They also exhibit showmanship by hanging from horses with one leg hooked on the saddle & the other dragged on the ground while waving to the crowd.

Extend the trek to Damodar Kunda

Located at the base of Mt. Damodar (6,039 m/19,813 ft), the Damodar Kunda (4,890 m/16,043 ft) is a crescent-shaped lake surrounded by many small lakes of different colors such as red, blue, and white. The lake is considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists and is believed to be a manifestation of Lord Vishnu. Taking a holy bath in the lake is believed to wash away all sins and sorrows and secure heaven after death.

The way to Damodar Kunda is surrounded by Buddhist monasteries and offers spectacular views of the Himalayas. Hiking a bit higher from the lake provides great viewpoints of the Tibetan plateau & Damodar Himal in the north, and Annapurna Himal in the south, making it an ideal destination for adventure and spiritual seekers alike.

Trek in a restricted area in Nepal

Upper Mustang is a restricted area in Nepal due to its strategic location near the border of Tibet (China). It was closed to foreigners until 1992 and still requires a special permit to enter. The Nepalese government restricts access to this region to preserve its unique culture, traditions, and environment.

Likewise, Upper Mustang was once an independent kingdom. It has a long history of political and cultural significance. The area is home to many ancient monasteries, caves with ancient Buddhist art, and other cultural treasures. By limiting access to the region, the government can better protect these sites and prevent over-tourism, which could cause damage to the environment and cultural heritage.

Is the upper Mustang trek worth doing?

Yes, the Upper Mustang trek is definitely worth doing for those who are interested in exploring a unique and isolated region of Nepal with a rich cultural and historical heritage. The trek offers stunning landscapes, such as barren deserts, giant mountains, and deep gorges, as well as a chance to witness ancient Tibetan Buddhist traditions and customs that are still practiced today.

One of the highlights of the trek is the opportunity to visit the walled city of Lo Manthang, which was once the capital of the Kingdom of Mustang. It is home to many well-preserved ancient buildings, monasteries, and cultural artifacts.

The unique cultural and natural experiences this trek offers make it a worthwhile investment for travelers interested in off-the-beaten-path adventure and cultural exploration.

Upper Mustang trek cost ranges from USD 1800 to USD 3500 per person. It is an expensive trek because of a costly permit. Your itinerary and service provided by the trekking company may affect the package price. To get a cheap package cost, we recommend doing this trek in a group.

The Upper Mustang trek is no doubt expensive, but the trekking experience and the landscapes you will witness during this trek are unlike any other trekking route in Nepal. If you want to explore Mustang on a budget, then go for the Lower Mustang trek. It is also an adventurous trek.

Accommodation on the Upper Mustang trek

During the Upper Mustang trek 18 days, you will stay overnight in teahouses. The teahouses are the most basic form of accommodation in the Himalayas. The rooms are small but cozy and comfortable to spend the night in. Most of the teahouses have western-style flush toilets. Tea houses are more like extended homes of the locals. You will get a clean room with a blanket and pillow.

The nights and mornings can get colder than you may think in the peak trekking season. So carry a sleeping bag. You can also request an additional blanket in the teahouse. We will book you the best accommodation during the Upper Mustang trekking.

Likewise, you can also do a camping Upper Mustang trek with us. Our porters will carry all the essentials and tents. Camping treks are a bit on the pricey side but very comfortable.

Food on the Upper Mustang Trek

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are given during the trek every day. We'll have our breakfast in the teahouse we spend the night, lunch on the way, and dinner in the teahouse we'll be spending the night. The Upper Mustang trek route is not that evolved, therefore the food menu is limited.

Nepali and Tibetan dishes dominate the menu, but you will also get dishes like sandwiches, pizza, burgers, pasta, noodles, etc. Likewise, momos, soups, dal bhat, thenduk, thukpa, Tibetan bread, curry, roti, etc, are commonly found everywhere.

Trekkers can carry chocolates, granola bars, and other snacks to munch while trekking. The snacks in the tea shops along the trail are very expensive. Similarly, you can refill your water bottle with boiled drinking water in every tea house for free of cost most of the time and use a water purification tablet for double safety.

Flights to Jomsom, the starting & ending point of the Upper Mustang Trek

Jomsom is the starting and ending point of our Upper Mustang trek. We reach Jomsom via a 6 hours drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, followed by a short 20 minutes flight to Jomsom. The Kathmandu Pokhara highway is well-pitched, so the ride will be smooth and offer gorgeous landscapes. Likewise, the flight from Pokhara to Jomsom is very scenic and offers striking aerial views of the Himalayan mountains.

Kathmandu Pokhara Drive

The distance between Kathmandu to Pokhara is 201.2 kilometers. It is a total of 6 to 7 hours drive. The traffic is quite moderate, so you will not get stuck on the way. Sometimes due to landslides in the rainy season, the affected parts of the road get blocked, creating traffic.

Kathmandu Pokhara Flight

From Kathmandu, the Pokhara flight duration is 25 minutes. It is a nonstop flight and presents beautiful scenery. Our Upper Mustang trek package cost included a bus ride from Kathmandu to Pokhara. However, you can upgrade the transportation to a flight by paying a little additional money.

Upper Mustang Trek Permits

Upper Mustang is a restricted area, so we have to obtain a special restricted area permit for trekking in this region. Along with that, Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit is also needed.

*Note: Independent guides or trekkers alone cannot obtain any restricted area permits. To get a restricted area permit, you have to travel with a local company like us.

Restricted area permit cost: USD 500 per person for the first 10 days and USD 50 per person each day after that
ACAP permit cost: USD 30 per person

Can I Get the Upper Mustang Permits Myself?

To enter the Upper Mustang, you have to get a restricted area permit from the Nepal government. It is a special permit formed to protect fragile areas like Upper Mustang and is only issued to foreigners via a local trekking company. So, as a solo trekker, you cannot get the Upper Mustang permit on your own, and neither solo trekking is allowed.

Do you need a TIMS permit to trek to Upper Mustang?

No, you do not need a TIMS permit for Upper Mustang trekking.

Upper Mustang Trek Difficulty

The Upper Mustang region is one of the very inaccessible parts of the Himalayas, and the trekking route is considered difficult. In terms of altitude, the Upper Mustang trail leads to 3,840 meters/12,598 ft (Lo Manthang), which is not much if we compare the altitude gain during famous treks like EBC and ABC.

However, the Upper Mustang trail is offbeat, and we will cross many passes ranging from 3,500 meters (11,483 ft) to 4,000 meters (13,123 ft) on the way to Lo Manthang.

The Upper Mustang trekking route is not comfortable in terms of services. There are not many tea shops along the way, and many parts of the trail are isolated. At the same time, the Upper Mustang trek is also not that strenuous.

Your ability and fitness determine the Upper Mustang trek difficulty for you. If you are fit and can walk 6 hours a day, you can do Upper Mustang trekking.

Best time to trek Upper Mustang

Like any other trek in Nepal, the best time to do Upper Mustang trekking is from March to Map and September to November. These months are the peak trekking season.

Apart from spring and autumn, you can do the Upper Mustang trek in the summer/monsoon season too. Just make sure to check the trail condition in the lower elevation and properly assess the weather.

Once you enter the Upper Mustang area, there is no rainfall as this is a rain shadow area. Likewise, we also organize the Upper Mustang trek in winter for travelers who understand the challenges and are willing to give it a try.

Upper Mustang Trek in Spring

The spring months, March to May, are a very favorable time to do Upper Mustang trekking. Though the climate is windy, the stable weather lets you be on the itinerary. The perfect balance of warm and cold weather makes trekking pleasant. And the views are crystal clear. The temperature ranges between -6°C to 22°C (21.2°F to 72°F).

Upper Mustang Trek in Summer/Monsoon

We highly recommend the Upper Mustang trek in the monsoon season, June to August. Because Upper Mustang is a trans-Himalayan region, there is no rainfall, so you can trek without worrying about rainfall. You may see rainfall in the lower altitude, however once you are in the upper part of the trail, there is no rain.

Likewise, the natives of Upper Mustang also celebrate their major festival Tiji in this season. It is a three-day festival celebrated as per the Tibetan lunar calendar. Many tourists love to see the vibrant traditional dance and rituals of the Tiji festival. Check out our special Tiji Festival trek for more information.

Upper Mustang Trek in Autumn

Autumn, September to November, is another great time of the year to embark on the Upper Mustang trek. The weather is fresh and clear after the monsoon rain. The views are fantastic, and the climate is pleasant, which makes trekking fun. The temperature ranges from around -8°C to 20°C (18°F to 68°F). Daytime is warmer than the nights and mornings.

Upper Mustang Trek in Winter

December to February is the inactive time for trekking in the Himalayas because of the extreme cold. The temperature drops below -25°C (-13°F), and the trail gets blocked because of heavy snowfall. In Upper Mustang, the climate gets biting cold, which makes trekking nearly impossible. Some tea houses may get closed, so you have to be self-sufficient to spend the night in tents in times like that.

Upper Mustang Trek Tips

  • WiFi- Tea houses at the lower elevation offer WiFi for some extra money, but the network is highly unreliable. You may have to pay USD 1 to USD 3 per hour to use WiFi. After Jomsom, the network along the trail is poor. However, in Lo Manthang, you will get a better internet connection.
  • Mobile network- The communication facility is decent along the Upper Mustang trail. Nepal Telecom (NTC) has good coverage in the Upper Mustang area. You will get a cellular network in almost all parts of the trekking route. Jomsom, Muktinath, and Lo Manthang have good reception. You can buy a tourist sim & use data for the internet and to call your family.
  • Hot Shower: Hot showers are available in most of the villages, but you may have to pay a few extra bucks- USD 2 to USD 5. Many locals rely on solar power or wood, so they charge small money for this service.
  • Charging- There are charging stations in the tea houses. Charging stations are separate spaces made where trekkers can charge their service. Again, you may have to pay another USD 1 to USD 3 for the service. You can carry a power bank, spare batteries, or solar charger.
  • ATM- There is an ATM lounge in Jomsom. Apart from this place, you will not see any ATM throughout the Upper Mustang trekking route. As you may have understood, you will need additional Nepali cash at the time of trekking for personal expenses like charging, hot shower, internet, etc, so make sure to withdraw ample Nepali cash for the journey.
  • Luggage- We use duffel bags during the trek, and day packs are carried by the trekkers. Additional luggage is stored in the hotel's locker room free of cost. Each trekker has a 10 kg weight limit for a duffel bag and a 5 kg weight limit for a day pack.

Other factors to consider include coverage for trip cancellations, lost or stolen luggage, and personal liability. Make sure to read the policy carefully and understand any exclusions or limitations.

  • Theft and scams: While Upper Mustang is generally safe, trekkers should be aware of theft and scams, especially in tourist areas. It is important to keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings.

Stomach problems on the Upper Mustang

The meals offered in the teahouses are clean and hygienic. The meat products are usually frozen, so it is best to avoid them if you get an upset stomach quickly. Likewise, avoid drinking water directly from a stream or a tap. Take your time while eating, and be mindful while choosing the food you eat.

Preventing Altitude Sickness (AMS) during the hike

As per the Himalayan standard, the elevation gain during the Upper Mustang trek 18 days is minimal. Still, you will be going above 2,500 meters (8,202 ft) and touching up to 4,010 meters (13,156 ft), you have to take necessary precautions to avoid altitude sickness. Altitude sickness is a common illness usually travelers get during high-altitude journeys like this.

If you are well acclimatized and take care of basics, then you can do the Upper Mustang trek without getting affected by altitude sickness. Some of the preventive measures are given below:

  • Ascend slowly
  • Drinky plenty of water and fluids

By adopting the above measures, you will be able to avoid altitude sickness. Below are some of the symptoms of altitude sickness:

  • Headache
  • Trouble in breathing
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of Appetite

Arrival Complications

Arriving in Nepal can sometimes be a challenge, especially if you are flying in from another country. Flight delays, cancellations, and lost baggage can happen. It is recommended to have a contingency plan in case of any arrival complications, such as having extra cash, essential items, and important documents in your carry-on luggage.

Similarly, in case of delay, inform us as soon as you can. We will rearrange the reservations as per your arrival time. There can be some charges for re-reserving hotels or transportation. Visas and Entry Requirements

All foreign nationals (except Indian citizens) require a visa to enter Nepal. Visas can be obtained on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or from Nepalese embassies and consulates abroad.

The visa fee varies depending on the duration of stay. Check the visa requirements and fees before arriving in Nepal, and carry the necessary documents with you.

If you are entering Nepal through land borders, you can get an on-arrival visa there too. Citizens of some countries are not eligible for on-arrival visas, so make sure to check your country's visa status. If you fail to get a visa and cancel the trip, the company will not be responsible for it.

Laundry

Laundry facilities are available in some tea houses along the trekking route. However, due to the remote location, the cost of laundry can be high. It is recommended to bring enough clothes for the entire trek or hand wash clothes as needed. Once you are back in Kathmandu or Pokhara, you can give your clothes to wash at a much better cost.

Money Exchange

Money can be exchanged at banks and authorized money exchange centers in Kathmandu and Pokhara. We recommend you exchange money at authorized centers to avoid scams and ensure a fair exchange rate.

Carry Nepalese rupees in cash for trekking expenses because locals do not accept cards or foreign currency in the mountains. However, in Kathmandu and Pokhara, you can do lots of payments through your card, and some places, like hotels, may also accept foreign currency.

Emergency Fund

Carry an emergency fund in case of unforeseen circumstances, such as flight cancellations or medical emergencies. The amount of the emergency fund depends on individual needs and circumstances, but it is recommended to carry enough cash to cover at least a few days of expenses.
