Detail About Ama Dablam Expedition

Do you have a passion for climbing mountains in the Himalayas and are not afraid of challenges? Then our 30 days Ama Dablam expedition in the eastern Himalayas of Nepal could be the journey for you. Climb this stunning yet notorious mountain with professional Sherpa mountaineers and a very knowledgeable supporting crew. Join us on our Ama Dablam expedition 2023/2024 departure now to get the best price.

Rising prominently in the Eastern Himalayas of Nepal, Ama Dablam is a formidable pinnacle of rock and ice, named after its stunning appearance. The mountain's long ridges resemble a mother's outstretched arms, providing shelter and security to her children, which is why it is referred to as 'Ama,' meaning mother. The hanging glacier suspended beneath the summit is reminiscent of the traditional pendant, 'Dablam,' worn by Sherpa women.

Ama Dablam, standing at an elevation of 6,812 meters (22,349 ft) above sea level, may not be among the highest peaks in the Himalayas, but it holds significant importance in the world of mountaineering. Climbing to the top of this peak is considered a remarkable feat, owing to the complex technical rock and ice climbing skills required to reach the summit.

Even experienced climbers who have conquered other 8,000m summits or have Everest summits under their belt can face difficulties on the Ama Dablam expedition. Therefore, it is imperative to have guides who possess extensive knowledge of the mountain to ensure a safe climb.

Ama Dablam is a highly sought-after Himalayan peak for permitted expeditions. The preferred and most renowned ascent route is via the Southwest Ridge, which involves climbing through four camps along the ridge. The first three camps are located just below the right side of the hanging glacier named Dablam, strategically placed to avoid any falling ice.

The Ama Dablam expedition requires a solid foundation of rock and ice climbing experience. The majority of the route up Ama Dablam is pre-established with fixed ropes, making it crucial for climbers to have proficiency in ascending and descending fixed ropes and passing anchors. One pitch during the climb is almost dead-vertical, so it is recommended that climbers practice climbing a vertical fixed rope before embarking on the expedition.

Mount Ama Dablam expedition also lets you explore the famous villages of the Khumbu region and offers incredible views of the mountains like Everest (8,849 m/29,032 ft), Lhotse (8,516 m/27,940 ft), Nuptse (7,861 m/25,791 ft), Pumori (7,161 m/23,494 ft), Makalu (8,481 m/27,825 ft), Cho Oyu (8,188 m/26,906 ft), Kanchenjunga (8,586 m/28,169 ft), Thamserku (6,608 m/21,680 ft), etc. You will get to immerse in the rich cultural heritage of the mountain people and witness breathtaking landscapes.

Ama Dablam expedition- trekking part

The initial part of the Ama Dablam expedition journey involves 7 days of trekking to the base camp. The trek goes through forested paths and remote villages of Sagarmatha National Park. There will be constant ascents and descents along the way. You will be trekking on uneven-trodden paths. Likewise, after climbing the mountain, you will return to the base camp and trek back to Lukla, where the journey ends.

The trekking part will let you meet with the local mountain community of the Khumbu region. You will spend nights in beautiful villages like Monjo, Namche Bazaar, Khumjung, Phortse, Dingboche, and Chukkung. Get to see the daily lifestyle of the locals and learn about their culture and traditions.

Pre-climbing training

Pre-climbing training provided at the base camp by the leader guide is an essential component of preparing for a successful summit push on Ama Dablam. The leader guide is responsible for ensuring that the climbers are adequately prepared and trained before embarking on the climb.

The pre-climbing training provided by the leader guide will help the climbers in several ways. Firstly, it will help them build the physical and mental resilience necessary for the climb. Secondly, it will improve their skills and techniques, making them better equipped to navigate the challenging terrain on Ama Dablam.

Thirdly, it will help prevent altitude sickness and other altitude-related health issues. Finally, it will build the climbers' confidence and help them develop a strong team dynamic, which is essential for a successful summit push.

Below are some examples of pre-climbing training that a leader guide may provide at the base camp:

  • Acclimatization: The guide will likely schedule a series of acclimatization hikes to prepare the climbers for the altitude. These hikes will allow the climbers to adjust to the thin air and high altitude and will help prevent altitude sickness.
  • Technical Training: You will learn to use crampons, ropes, and other climbing equipment. Technical training will help you develop the skills and techniques necessary to navigate the challenging terrain on Ama Dablam.
  • Climbing Practice: The guide will organize climbing practice sessions, allowing the climbers to practice their skills on smaller climbs or technical sections of the route. These sessions will help build the climbers' confidence and improve their ability to navigate the more challenging sections of the climb.
  • Physical Training: You may get physical training sessions to help you build strength and endurance. These sessions may include weight training, cardio exercises, and other activities that will pump you for the climbing.
  • Mental Training: This training session will help you prepare for the mental and emotional challenges of climbing at high altitudes. The session may include breathing exercises, visualization techniques, and mindfulness practices.

Ama Dablam climbing route- SouthWest Route

Ama Dablam Base Camp (4,570 m/15,000 ft)

At an altitude of 4,570 m/15,000 ft, the Ama Dablam base camp has accommodating terrain at such a height. Climbers can indulge in activities such as volleyball and soccer to keep warm and relish the stunning scenery. This base camp is set up for expedition duration in both the spring and autumn seasons.

The location offers great views of Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Taboche, and Kongde. Due to its strategic location, Ama Dablam's camp is generally sunny, with early morning and late afternoon sun. There are typically 7-10 climbing teams during each spring and fall season.

Yak Camp (5,182 m/17,000 ft): 3-4 hours

As you continue climbing from the Ama Dablam base camp, you'll join the southwest ridge, where the guides will leave some of the heavy equipment needed for the ascent. After reaching the Yak Camp, the crew will set the tents for the climbing duration.

Camp I (5,700 m/18,800 ft): 3 hours

Camp I is located at an altitude of 5,700 m/18,800 0ft, and the journey from Yak Camp to Camp I takes approximately 3 hours. The trail to Camp I is mostly a walking path, with a short section of casual stone scrambling that is only 100m long. The area around Camp I is situated at a slope of 60º.

On the way, you will come across large rocks and climb an easy fourth-class piece without any fixed ropes in place. There are very few spots available to pitch a tent on Ama Dablam Southwest edge. Thus, coordination and sharing are required among climbers. There is space for approximately 6-7 two-person tents and 6-7 single tents.

Camp II (5,950 m/19,521 ft): 3 hours

Camp II is situated at an altitude of 5,950 m/19,521 ft. The climb from Camp I to Camp II is considered the most technical segment on the route. The day begins with scrambling and moving along an easy fourth-class level stone ridge, encompassing several peaks and gendarmes while gaining only 300 meters/1000 vertical feet.

The area is wide open, with massive drop-offs on both sides of the bank, and the climbing experience is delightful with high-quality rock. Toward the end of the level ridge, climbers must climb the Yellow Tower, which is about six meters tall and is considered French fourth class, British Severe, North American YDS 5.5.

Upon reaching the Yellow Tower, climbers will arrive at Camp Two on small ledges, providing a true feeling of a high mountain camp with high exposure on all sides. One must be cautious when using the restroom at this altitude.

Camp III (6,200 m/20,341 ft): 2 hours

Climbing from Camp II to Camp III involves a shift to mixed ice and snow terrain, with fixed ropes set up along the entire distance. Climbers will have excellent views of Ama Dablam Base Camp, the Kusum Kanguru, and Kantega. At this point, it's time to cross the infamous Mushroom Ridge at 6,150 meters/20,300 feet, looking up at Center III (6,300 m/20,800 ft) with Dablam towering above.

While some strong climbers may attempt to push for the summit from Camp II, Mountain Ram Adventure always fixes base three before the group's arrival. It is important to note that this section of the mountain is at high risk for avalanches. Therefore, reducing the time spent at this camp or bypassing it is crucial.

For climbers who may not feel strong enough to push from Camp III, a six-hour rest here before starting the final push is typical. The slope from the Yellow Tower to Camp III is nearly 55º almost the entire way.

Summit (6,812 m/22,349 ft): 10 hours

The journey to the summit of Ama Dablam from camp III and back to camp II takes about 10 hours for most climbers. The summit day is an extraordinary one, with two emotional yet demanding pitches of snow-ice climbing at a 40º+ angle towards the Dablam side. When you reach close to the Ama Dablam summit, you will come across a fluted snowfield (30-50º) that leads you to one of the world's most exquisite summits.

From the top, you will be rewarded with the best view of the Khumbu, the epicenter of high-altitude climbing, with stunning panoramic views of Lhotse, Nuptse, Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Pumori, Shishapangma, and Makalu.

Ama Dablam location and climbing history

Ama Dablam is a mountain in the Himalayas located in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal. It is considered one of the most beautiful and challenging mountains in the world, with its dramatic spire-like shape and steep technical climbing routes.

The mountain stands at 6,812 meters (22,349 feet) high and is located just south of Mount Everest, in the heart of the Sagarmatha National Park. The name Ama Dablam means "Mother's Necklace" in the Sherpa language, referring to the mountain's unique shape resembling a mother holding a child and a dangling necklace.

Ama Dablam's climbing history dates back to the 1960s when a team of New Zealand and American climbers first attempted to summit the mountain. However, it was not until 1961 that a team of four climbers, led by Sir Edmund Hillary, reached the summit. Since then, Ama Dablam has become a popular destination for experienced climbers.

Distance & terrain

The trekking terrain is rugged, steep, and rocky in some sections. You need to trek 6 hours a day on a minimum via tiny settlements and dense forests. The trail gradually gets tough with the increase in elevation. The air will get thinner as the day passes by. We have multiple acclimatizations before we push toward the summit to make the climbing safe and successful.

Ama Dablam has several technical routes, including the Southwest Ridge, the Northeast Ridge, and the Southwest Face. The most popular route is the Southwest Ridge, which involves steep rock and ice climbing and is considered one of the most challenging routes in the Himalayas. The climbing route is challenging, with a mix of ice, rock, and mixed terrain.

The final leg of the climb involves crossing the mushroom ridge, a section of icy sculptures on a rocky ridge that is both treacherous and stunningly beautiful. Camp II is built on the mushroom ridge to avoid any dangers from icefall. In recent years, Camp III has been hit by fatal icefalls, but Camp II has proven to be a safer alternative. From here, we can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains before settling into our camp for the night.

The day has finally arrived for the ascent to the summit of Ama Dablam peak. Due to the unpredictable weather in the mountain region, the climb will begin at dawn. While the technical climb from Camp III to the summit is considered easier than on other days, the challenge lies in ascending to a higher altitude in extremely cold temperatures. Climbers are advised to take small and steady steps while holding onto ropes. The challenges of the climb may seem insignificant when compared to the stunning panoramic views from the top.

Congratulations on successfully conquering the Ama Dablam Peak Summit, which translates to 'Mother's Necklace' in honor of the Sherpa women's traditional double pendant called Dablam. The peak's long ridges resemble a mother's arms protecting her child. It is one of the most breathtaking peaks in the Himalayas of Nepal. In addition to the pride of accomplishing the climb, climbers can enjoy stunning views of mountains like Lhotse, Everest, and Makalu. After the thrilling climb, you will head back to Camp III.
