Mount Everest location and its history

The coordinates of Mount Everest are 27°59′17″N 86°55′31″E. It is located in the Mahalangur Range of the Himalayas, on the border of Nepal and Tibet. Tibet is on the north side of Mount Everest, whereas Nepal is on the south. In Tibet, Everest is protected under the Qomolangma National Nature Preserve, whereas Nepal protects this mountain under Sagarmatha National Park regulations.

*Note: The Mahalangur range is the largest Himalayan mountain system that stretches over 2,400 kilometers (1,500 miles) from Afghanistan to Bhutan. This range contains four of the world's ten highest mountains- Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.

During the Mount Everest expedition, we'll approach it from the South Col (Nepal's side). As Everest goes above 8,000 meters (26,247 feet), you will be climbing in the Death Zone, where the air is thin, and the low oxygen level makes it impossible for life to sustain. You will be in one of the most extreme environments on Earth, fighting with challenging terrain, high altitude, and exposure to sun, wind, and cold.

History
If we look back at the history of the Everest expedition, then it goes back to the early 20th century when the first British explorers began their attempt to summit. In 1921, a British reconnaissance expedition survived Mount Everest and specified the most feasible route to the summit. It was from Tibet following the North Col.

Between 1922 and 1923, George Mallory tried a couple of times to summit Mount Everest but couldn't do so because of bad weather and an avalanche. During the attempt in 1923, an avalanche killed seven Sherpas, and Mallory and his climbing partner Andrew Irvine disappeared while attempting to reach the summit. After this incident, Mallory's body was not found until 1999.

In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa from Nepal, became the first human to reach the summit of Mount Everest via the South Col. This marked a huge achievement in the history of mountaineering and inspired many climbers to climb Everest.

As adventurous and exhilarating as the Mount Everest expedition can get, do not forget that over 300 people have died on its slopes. Therefore, proper planning, weather analysis, and strong support are needed for a safe journey.

Everest expedition preparation

Everest expedition preparation involves many things. You have to train your body and mind, get altitude training, arrange climbing gear, plan a perfect itinerary, and put together a strong supporting crew. At Mountain Ram Adventure, we help our guests get ready for the Everest expedition from the moment the trip gets confirmed.

Our team will send you a personalized training plan and activities to do to prepare your body and mind. We will help you buy or rent the best climbing gear. Climbing Mount Everest is very difficult and demanding, and preparing for the venture involves intense physical training.

Here are some of the key aspects of an Everest expedition preparation in detail:

Physical fitness:
Climbing Everest requires a high level of physical fitness, as the climbers will have to endure extreme temperatures, thin air, and harsh terrain. Before starting the climb, climbers need to undergo a rigorous physical training program that includes aerobic and anaerobic exercises, strength training, and endurance training.

The training should be focused on building strength in the legs, arms, core, and back, as these muscles are most used during climbing. Cardiovascular training, such as hiking, running, cycling, and swimming, is also essential to improve endurance and oxygen uptake.

Mental preparation:

Climbing Everest is not only a test of physical endurance, but it is also a test of mental toughness. Mental preparation is critical to overcoming the stress, anxiety, and fear that come with climbing such a challenging mountain.

Climbers should practice meditation, visualization, and mental relaxation techniques to prepare themselves for the mental stress of climbing. They should also develop a positive attitude, mental resilience, and confidence in their abilities.

Technical skills:

Climbing Everest involves technical skills such as rope management, glacier travel, and crossing of crevasses. Climbers should have prior experience and training in mountaineering and rock climbing. They should also be skilled in using mountaineering equipment such as crampons, ice axes, and ropes.

Altitude training:

At an altitude of 8,848 meters, the air pressure is low, and the oxygen level is less than half of what it is at sea level. Acclimatization to high altitude is essential to avoid altitude sickness and increase the chances of success in the climb.

During the Everest expedition, we undergo altitude training, which involves gradually increasing the altitude and duration of the climb to allow the body to adapt to low oxygen levels.

Gear and equipment:

You must have proper gear and equipment to ensure safety and comfort during the climb. Buy high-quality, waterproof, and windproof outer layer, warm and moisture-wicking layers for the inner layer, sturdy climbing boots, crampons, ice axes, helmets, and climbing harnesses.

Other essential gear includes sleeping bags, medical supplies, including altitude sickness medication, and first-aid kits. We will provide you with the Everest expedition packing checklist that you can follow.

Logistics and Planning:

The Everest expedition requires extensive planning and logistics. Climbers need to obtain permits, arrange transportation, hire local guides and porters, and arrange food and accommodation during the climb. You also have to fix a detailed plan of the route, rest stops, and backup plans in case of emergencies.

If you do Mount Everest climbing with us, we will take care of all these things. Our crew will be there to fix the tents and prepare the meals as you spend time acclimatizing. Likewise, our Sherpa guides will be giving you pre-climbing training and help you prepare for the final push.

Everest expedition south col route:

Base camp: 5,364 m/ 17,598 ft

Everest base camp is the permanent camp for mountaineers aiming to climb mount Everest. Located at the foot of Khumbu Glacier, which flows down from the Western Cwm on the southern slopes of Everest, the base camp terrain is rugged and mountainous, with steep hills, rocky outcroppings, and moraine fields.

Before you reach the Everest base camp, our supporting team will be already there, all ready to welcome you with a delightful meal and comforting sleeping tents. We use separate sleeping tents, dining tents, washroom tents, and kitchen tents. At the base camp, you will spend many days acclimatizing and doing rotations on the Khumbu Icefall.

Camp I: 6,065 m/ ft

From Everest base camp to Camp I, the route is very technical. You will be navigating the Khumbu icefall. However, as you have already climbed it a few times during your acclimatization rotations, the final climb will not look daunting to you.

Our Sherpa guides will assist you during climbing. The Khumbu Icefall is 2,000' ft moving ice with deep chasms, ice sera, and torrential slides off. Camp I will be on a rocky outcrop on the Khumbu Glacier. It is a temporary camp for climbers on the way to the Mt. Everest summit.

Camp II: 6,492 m/21,299 ft

Camp II is built on a broad ride above the Western Cwm along a moraine at the lower part of the west edge. This is a safe area to camp with a grand view of Lhotse. The climbing route from Camp I to Camp II is steep and goes along ice cliffs, crossing deep crevasses.

We will set up our second primary camp with more substantial infrastructure after the base camp here. There will be separate sleeping for all climbers with a common kitchen, dining, and washroom tents. Above the Everest base camp, we will spend most of our time here before the summit push.

Camp III: 7,470 m/24,500 ft

To reach Camp III, we will be climbing the Lhotse Face, following a tricky route. The high elevation makes the climbing much more difficult from Camp II onwards. Plus, we will try our best to not use supplemental oxygen at this point.

We will be climbing on unstable and steep icy slopes using a fixed route. The slopes are 30 to 45 degrees. Camp III is our second temporary home. From Camp II to Camp III, we gain almost 1000 meters, so we will be spending a couple of nights acclimatizing before climbing towards Camp IV.

South Col: 8,000 m/26,300 ft

South Col or Camp IV is our last camp before reaching Mount Everest summit. Also known as the moon- Everest situated on the north and Lhotse on the south, Camp IV is covered in loose rocks. Camp IV is situated on a narrow saddle between Everest and Lhotse. Usually, climbers reach South Col without using supplemental oxygen.

Leaving Camp III, we will navigate through two rock sections- the Yellow Band, which is an inter-layer of marble, phyllite, semi schist rock & the Geneva Spur, which is an anvil-shaped rib of black stone. The guides will fix the entire route with ropes.

Summit: 8,8489 m/29,032 ft (1 hour or less)

From South Col, the Everest summit is situated approximately one hour away. During the summit push day, we will leave Camp IV at dawn and use our headlamps and fixed rope to make our way up to the Balcony. It is a small platform at 8,400 meters (27,500 ft).

From here, we will continue climbing up to the southeast ridge, which further leads to the famous Hillary Step, a 12-meter (40-foot) rock face that must be climbed before reaching the summit. After that comes the south summit, and we'll climb to the central panel. The final walk to the true summit is on a moderate snow slope.

How long does it take to climb Everest?

The Everest expedition demands a long time and patience. Climbing to the top of the world is much more arduous than you can imagine. Lots of preparations, support, and hard work are needed. Unlike trekking, you will be climbing in a very harsh environment where every second and every step matters. The stakes are at their highest while climbing Everest, so extra care and safety precautions are used.

Before the ascent to the summit of Everest, we do several acclimatization rotations, where climbers spend time at different elevations to help their bodies adjust to the high altitude and reduced oxygen levels. These rotations are essential to help prevent altitude sickness, which can be a serious and even life-threatening condition. The acclimatization process can take several weeks and involves climbing to various altitudes, then descending back to base camp to rest and recover before ascending again.

In addition to the acclimatization process, climbers also need to factor in rest days and potential weather delays. Weather conditions on Everest can be unpredictable and harsh, with high winds, snowstorms, and extreme cold temperatures. Climbers need to be prepared to wait out bad weather and adjust their schedules accordingly.

And the final push to the summit typically involves several days of climbing. The climbers move from camp to camp as they gain altitude. The summit push can be physically and mentally demanding, and climbers need to be in top physical condition to make the final ascent to the summit.

We have three phases for the Everest expedition- trekking, climbing & trekking. First, we trek to Everest base camp, which takes 10 days from Lukla. From day 13th to the 56th, we will acclimatize and gradually push towards the summit of Everest and return to the base camp.

We have one extra day at the base camp to clean it, and from day 58th, we begin our return trek to Lukla. We also have a reserve day. If not used in the mountains, there will be two days in Kathmandu to rest before your final departure on the 63rd day of the trip.

Everest expedition 2023/2024 itinerary summary

Our Everest expedition itinerary is 63 days long, which makes it 9 weeks. We want you to be flexible with the itinerary because there can be changes in it as per the weather and the climate. After three days in Kathmandu, the journey begins from Lukla. You will trek through lush rhododendron forests, verdant river valleys, and picturesque villages to the base of Mount Everest.

You will then spend the next six weeks climbing mount Everest. This involves acclimatization rotations. After that, we do the base camp cleaning and trek back to Lukla and fly to Kathmandu. At the end of the journey, your body and mind won't go back to your normal self right away. You have to give yourself some time to rest and recover.
