Towards the highest altitudes, you will notice the influence of the Tibetan lifestyle and food, with people following both Buddhism and Hinduism. The people in the Kanchenjunga region engage in tourism, animal husbandry, and agriculture as their core occupations.

Restricted area, wonderful nature, and stunning mountain views

The Kanchenjunga circuit trek is a restricted trekking area in Nepal. Therefore, it requires a local guide and a minimum of two trekkers to obtain the necessary permits. These regulations and restrictions have helped preserve the natural and cultural beauty of the region, making it a perfect destination for those seeking peace and solitude amidst nature.

The Kanchenjunga trek is popular for its remoteness. The area was opened for trekkers only in 1988, and hence, there are relatively fewer trekkers in this region. The Kanchenjunga area is rich in wildlife and natural heritage, with minimal human influence.

The mesmerizing natural wonders will accompany you throughout the journey, with the only sounds being those of the flowing rivers, chirping birds, and the gentle rustling of leaves. The pristine environment provides an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, allowing you to connect with nature and rejuvenate your senses.

Likewise, the Kanchenjunga region is also home to roughly twenty peaks that exceed 7,000 meters, with notable peaks such as Kambachen (7,903 m), Janu (7,710 m), Jongsong (7,483 m), Kabru (7,353 m), Tent Peak (7,365 m), and the Twins (7,350 m). Furthermore, numerous peaks rise above 6,000 meters.

Amidst this cluster of peaks are five major glacial systems. Zumu, Talung, and Rathong flow into Sikkim, while to the west, the Kanchenjunga and Yalung glaciers flow into the mighty Tamor River in Nepal.

Kanchenjunga Circuit location and its history

Kanchenjunga Circuit is a remote trekking route located in the Himalayan region of Nepal. It is named after Mount Kanchenjunga, which is the third-highest mountain in the world and is situated on the border between Nepal and India. The Kanchenjunga circuit is considered to be one of the most beautiful and challenging trekking routes in Nepal, as it takes trekkers through rugged terrain, high-altitude passes, and remote villages.

The Kanchenjunga circuit starts in Taplejung, a small town in the far eastern part of Nepal. The trail passes through the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, which was established in 1997 to protect the unique flora and fauna of the region. The history of the Kanchenjunga Circuit is closely linked with the history of mountaineering in Nepal.

The first recorded attempt to climb Mount Kanchenjunga was made in 1905 by a British team led by Douglas Freshfield. However, it was not until 1955 that the mountain was successfully climbed by a British team led by Charles Evans and Joe Brown. Since then, Kanchenjunga has been climbed by several expeditions, but the region remained largely inaccessible to trekkers until the 1980s.

The Kanchenjunga Circuit trail was officially opened to trekkers in 1988. But, it was only in the late 1990s that the trek started gaining popularity among trekkers. The Kanchenjunga circuit is still a relatively less popular trekking route compared to other popular routes like the Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit trek. However, it is gaining popularity among experienced trekkers who are looking for more challenging and remote trekking in Nepal.

Kanchenjunga Circuit trek distance & terrain

The Kanchenjunga circuit trek is a challenging and remote trekking route that covers a distance of around 230 kilometers. The trek takes around 20-25 days to complete. Trekkers need to be in good physical condition and have previous trekking experience to undertake it. The Kanchenjunga circuit trek is usually done in an anti-clockwise direction, starting from Taplejung and ending in Suketar.

The trek starts in Taplejung, a small town in the far eastern part of Nepal, and passes through several traditional villages and remote mountain valleys. The first few days of the trek involve walking through dense forests, crossing rivers, and climbing steep hills. The trek then enters the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area.

The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area is home to several rare and endangered species of flora and fauna, including the snow leopard, the red panda, and the Himalayan black bear. Trekkers can expect to see a variety of wildlife and birds during this trek. The Kanchenjunga circuit trek then leads trekkers through high-altitude passes, including the Sele La Pass and the Mirgin La Pass.

The highest point on the Kanchenjunga circuit trekking is the Pang Pema Base Camp, which is located at an altitude of 5,160 meters. The base camp offers a breathtaking view of Mount Kanchenjunga and other peaks in the region. The trail then descends through the Yalung Glacier to the village of Ghunsa, where trekkers can rest and explore the local culture. The final leg of the trek involves walking through traditional villages and lush green forests before reaching the town of Suketar or Hapu Khola.
