While trekking in the Everest region, you will have the option to start trekking from either the town of Jiri, accessible from Kathmandu by bus or private jeep, or from Lukla, a short flight from Kathmandu.
If you only have a limited amount of time, it is best to fly directly into Lukla from Kathmandu. In order to minimize the risk of altitude sickness, you will need a minimum of 2 weeks to trek to Everest Base Camp and Kalapathar from the Lukla starting point. If you have more time and want to get the most out of your mountain experience, Mountain Ram Adventures recommends commencing the trek from the village of Jiri - known as the "Switzerland of Nepal". Starting from Jiri, the total length of the trek will be 3 weeks which will give you ample time to improve your fitness and to acclimatize to the high mountain altitudes that you will encounter later on in the trek. This will also allow you the opportunity to get off the beaten path and follow in the footsteps of early mountaineers on the old expedition route.
For a description of the Lukla to Everest Base Camp portion of this trek, please see the Everest Base Camp page.
