Detail About Jiri to EBC Trek

While trekking in the Everest region, you will have the option to start trekking from either the town of Jiri, accessible from Kathmandu by bus or private jeep, or from Lukla, a short flight from Kathmandu.

If you only have a limited amount of time, it is best to fly directly into Lukla from Kathmandu.  In order to minimize the risk of altitude sickness, you will need a minimum of 2 weeks to trek to Everest Base Camp and Kalapathar from the Lukla starting point.  If you have more time and want to get the most out of your mountain experience, Mountain Ram Adventures recommends commencing the trek from the village of Jiri - known as the "Switzerland of Nepal".  Starting from Jiri, the total length of the trek will be 3 weeks which will give you ample time to improve your fitness and to acclimatize to the high mountain altitudes that you will encounter later on in the trek. This will also allow you the opportunity to get off the beaten path and follow in the footsteps of early mountaineers on the old expedition route.

For a description of the Lukla to Everest  Base Camp portion of this trek, please see the Everest Base Camp page.

Jiri to EBC During Winter Season: The Winter Season is an extreme time to explore the grueling Himalayas due to the unforgiving freezing temperatures. The winter season spans from late November to February. The time frame from late November to early December is also a good time to trek as the trails are mostly empty with high possibility of snowfall with temperature being on the lower side but not as extreme as the peak winter season. The trekkers are highly recommended to hire a well experienced Guide/ Sherpa for their journey who will be assisting them to overcome the harsh conditions of the Himalayas. The trekkers are also requested to pack warm and light clothes for their journey.

Jiri to EBC During Summer/Monsoon Season: The monsoon season is not recommended to the trekkers to participate due to the heavy rains, muddy trails and leeches which makes it extremely difficult to trek. The trekkers also won't be able to enjoy the views of the Himalayas which are hidden behind the monsoon clouds, making the journey gloomy and dull. The only positive aspect of trekking in the monsoon season is that the routes are completely empty due to the unfavorable conditions. The trekkers are highly recommended to shift their travel plans to other seasons if they want to experience the best of the Everest region and if they can't make changes to their schedules then they are recommended to trek to the Rain Shadow areas of the Himalayas including the Upper Mustang Trek, Upper Dolpa Trek  or the Nar Phu Valley Trek where the chances of rainfall is extremely low even during the peak monsoon season.
