Pikey Peak Trek is the ultimate trekking adventure in Nepal. It is located in the Solukhumbu district of Nepal in the Everest Region. If you are looking to avoid crowded trails, then this is the trek for you. The Pikey Peak Trek is a newly opened trail which can be organized and customized by Mountain Ram Adventures, accessible for beginners and more experienced trekking enthusiasts alike. According to Sir Edmund Hillary, Pikey Peak is the most astounding place to gaze at Mount Everest and this was his favorite vantage point from which to admire the panoramic mountain range. On a clear day, you can stand here with captivating views of Nepal’s eightthousanders from one place, including Mount Everest.

As you walk, you will have the trail to yourself as few visitors have yet to discover this magical route. It is an experience imbued with awe-inspiring landscape, absolute wilderness, undisturbed serenity and lush forests. You will encounter stunning terrains rich with vegetation of the Khumbu Region providing an enriching experience of the ethnic Sherpa culture. The countless Buddhist monasteries and stupas provide a spiritual experience which will cleanse your mind, body and soul.

The trek begins from Kathmandu on a ten hour journey by 4WD to Dhap. The scenic beauty of the countryside is unparalleled as you drive through the beautiful and quaint town of Okhaldhunga and stopping for a hearty lunch of Dal Bhat. The trek begins from Dhap and stops at Singane and Jhapre. From Jhapre, we continue to Bhulbhule and from there onwards to Pikey Peak.

Upon your arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport the representatives of the Mountain Ram Adventures team will be ecstatically waiting for your arrival. The team members will be assisting you with your luggages and transferring you to your hotel via a private car and will be further assisting you with the check in formalities. Freshen up and explore Thamel which is a touristic hub where you can experience the authentic local culture with a hint of western influence.

Be ready to be fascinated by the Nepalese history and architecture as you will be heading to a sightseeing tour of four of the UNESCO world heritage sites within the Kathmandu valley. You will be assisted by a knowledgeable English speaking guide who will share their knowledge about the monuments and sites during sightseeing. Your sightseeing trip will finish at around 5 PM and then you will be dropped off at your hotel, freshen up and relax for a bit as afterwards you will be meeting with the team members of the Mountain Ram Adventures who will be giving you a briefing about the trek.

Highlights of the sightseeing tour:

  1. Swayambhunath Temple:
    Swayambhunath better known as the Monkey Temple is a venerated Buddhist shrine which is located at a hilltop called the Singum or Gosringa (Cowhorn) around 300 feet from the valley ground. The temple is one of the sacred sites for the Buddhist and Hindu community all around the country. The view from the top of the hill is a sight to behold as at the top there is a dome shaped stupa surrounded by temples and shrines which contrasts with the view of the Kathmandu valley at the back making it even more spectacular.

  2. Pashupatinath Temple:
    The temple of Pashupati situated at the bank of the holy Bagmati river is one of the revered sites for the devotees of the hindu community  all around the world. The original temple is said to be constructed by Pashuprekshya of the Somadeva dynasty in the 3rd century BCE( Around 2000 years ago). The temple is visited by more than hundreds of devotees everyday for religious purposes.

  3. Bouddhanath Stupa:
    Boudhanath Stupa is one of the largest spherical stupas in Nepal located at the northeast of the Kathmandu valley. The Boudhanath Stupa falls in the ancient trade route which connected Kathmandu and Tibet. The Stupa holds a significant value for the people of the Buddhist and Hindu community. Even though located within the hustle and bustle of the city the stupa provides an escape from the city life giving a sense of serenity.

  4. Patan Durbar Square:
    The Patan Durbar Square is one of the most iconic landmarks of the valley which used to serve as the royal residence of the Kings of Malla dynasty. The Patan Durbar Square area is  concentrated with Temples, Shrines, Hitis, Palaces and many more. There is also a Museum within the Durbar square where you can appreciate the history, art and architecture of the country.

The journey from Kathmandu will begin after having our breakfast. We will be heading towards the Eastern midlands of Nepal passing through beautiful terrains alongside Roshi Khola and Sunkoshi River. The roads are beautifully carved along the hills and are filled with curves and turns occasionally providing a glimpse of the High Himalayas. We will be passing through the districts of Bhaktapur, Kavrepalanchowk, Sindhuli and Ramechhap along the way before entering the Solukhumbu District. We will be staying at Dhap for the night from where you can enjoy the views of the Himalayas if the weather is clear.

During the early dawn you will be greeted by the white snow capped mountains which turn a bright shade of Gold and Orange which motivates us to look forward to our journey to the Pikey peak.

The trek to Pikey Peak begins from Dhap as we will be heading towards Jhapre which takes around 6-7 hours of hiking for around 13 KM. The hike is relatively comfortable as there are not any harsh inclines or descents and is a pleasant one as we will be passing through thick lush Rhododendron forest. During the clearing of the forest along the trail you can see the scattered settlements of the Local Sherpa community in the cliff sides along with terrace farmings which are meticulously built by the Sherpas for self sustenance.

The trek from Jhapre to Pikey Base camp is an uphill ascent through Lhamuje Danda and Bhulbhuley. After reaching Bhulbhuley the trail splits and we will be taking the path heading towards the Pikey peak. We will also be passing through a Yak cheese factory so make sure to explore the factory and enjoy the cheese as well. The trek is a scenic one as we pass through clearings with grassy ridges through which we can witness the mountains of the Mahalangur Himalayas. The trekking trail is filled with Lush Rhododendron forest and subalpine bushes and wild flowers.

We will be spending the night at Pikey Base Camp from where we will be heading to witness the Great Himalayan Trail ranging from Kanchenjunga at the east all the way to Dhaulagiri in the West.

The Trek from Pikey Base Camp begins early in the morning before sunrise. We will be heading towards Pikey Peak to witness the golden sunrise in the Himalayas. The trek from the Base camp is the hardest as it is an uphill journey with a steep incline. After reaching the peak you will be greeted with an unforgettable view. The sight is purely majestic as we have panoramic views of the Himalayas ranging from the Mighty Kanchenjunga in the East to the Dazzling Dhaulagiri in the west. The mountains in the western side might be a little hard to recognize as they are quite far.

After enjoying the views of the Himalayas we will be heading towards Junbesi which is a Sherpa village tucked within the laps of the Himalayas. The journey to Junbesi is a long yet memorable one as we will be trekking through green subalpine forest reaching Jase Bhanjyang and Lamjura through which we will be finally reaching our final destination of Junbesi village.

On the 7th day of our trip we will be exploring the local settlement and the Thupten Choling Monastery which was erected in 1968 AD by Rinpoche on a donated property near Junibesi. We will be hiking alongside the Solu River before reaching the Monastery which takes around 5-6 Hours in total. We will be descending back to the Junbesi village for the night.

After spending a day exploring the Thupten Choling Monastery and Junbesi village we will be heading down to Salleri the next day. The route takes us through the village of Salung which offers exceptional views of the mighty Everest, Makalu and Chamlang. We will be heading towards the settlement of Phera and Phaplu after crossing the Solu river along the way. While trekking through Phaplu you can also see the Chiwang Monastery tucked away amidst the jungle. After enjoying the scenic views of the himalayas blended with the lush green hills we will be reaching the settlement of Salleri where we will be staying the night.

The trek from Junbesi to Salleri was the final stretch of our trek as we will be heading back to Kathmandu after having a proper meal at Salleri. The drive from Salleri to Kathmandu takes us through the same path we traveled at the beginning of our trek from Dhap. After reaching Kathmandu we will drop you at your designated hotel then you can explore the Thamel area after freshening up. The Mountain Ram Adventures team will be hosting a farewell dinner for you as well as providing you with a recognition certificate for completing the trek with the Mountain Ram Adventures Team.

The trip is finally completed as the Mountain Ram Adventures team will drop you at the Airport for your departure. The team members will be assisting you with your checkout formalities and luggages and will be transferring you to the airport in a private vehicle. The Pikey Peak trail takes place within the Eastern Midlands of Nepal. The trek begins from the settlement of Dhap which is around 230 KM away from the Capital city of Kathmandu. The trek takes place completely within the District of Solukhumbu. The trek is a less commercialized trail so the trail is not overcrowded with trekkers and is the perfect destination to witness the true beauty of the Great Himalayan Trail.

You will be staying in a 3 Star Category Hotel in Kathmandu whereas during your trek you will be staying in a Tea house where you will be provided with a twin sharing room. The trekking routes of Pikey Peak are not yet well established yet but the locals of the Tea house offer services beyond their resources for your comfort and safety.

The Pikey Peak Trek falls under the Moderate trekking Grade yet the trails of Pikey Peak trek are relatively comfortable with steady off beaten paths and easy inclines. The hardest part of the whole trek is considered to be the trek from Pikey Base camp to Pikey Peak which is a steep incline other than that the trek is a comfortable journey through lush green forest and great views of the Himalayas.

The meals available in the routes are actually quite good and tasty even though the routes are relatively new. The Pikey Peak trek is not so far from the settlement regions which are accessible by road so there is also a relatively wide range of food to select from consisting of Tibetan, Nepali and Indian cuisine.

The threat of Altitude sickness is not so high in the trek as the max altitude is 4065 M at the Pikey Peak. Even though the risk is minimal, the trekkers should be careful with their pace, altitude and weather. The trekkers should follow their guides and trek according to their pace which helps them better acclimatize with the changing environment. Incase of any emergencies make sure to inform your guide as they are well versed and can provide you with proper guidelines and medication.

Yes, the guides are mandatory for the trek as per the rules and regulations of the Government of Nepal. The Mountain Ram Adventures team will provide you with a licensed guide and porter( 1 Porter for 2 trekkers) for your trek. The guides and porters will make your trip comfortable and enjoyable.

No, there are no ATMs available in the Trekking routes so for the personal expenses, gratitudes, tips and other expenses you are requested to withdraw or exchange during your stay at Kathmandu. Make sure you have enough for the trek by consulting with the Mountain Ram Adventures team. Make sure you have Nepalese currency with you for the trek as there is no other currency accepted during most of the treks in the high himalayas. *Note: the ATMs charge a certain fee as bank charges during your withdrawal ranging from 2-5% depending on the bank.

No permits are required to trek in the Pikey Peak as the trekking routes or destinations mentioned in the itinerary designed by the Mountain Ram Adventures team does not commence within any of the Protected areas of Nepal due to which you are not required to have a permit.

The Pikey Peak trekking route is a comparatively safe trek with minimum chance of landslides but if you decide to trek in the Monsoon/ Summer season which lies in the month of June, July and August the risk increases by a lot as well as the routes will be muddy and slippery while also being filled with leeches giving you a hard time. During the season the risk of landslides and avalanches are quite low.

There are no health restrictions currently to travel in Nepal but make sure to be updated about the policies of the country as well as for your comfortable journey make sure to check the guidelines and policies of your airlines and transit countries. The best time to trek in Pikey Peak is during the Spring Season and Autumn Season which falls under the months of March, April and May (Spring) and September, October and November (Autumn). During the season the skies are crystal clear providing stunning views of the high himalayas and the weather are also predictable making it much more preferable time to trek in Pikey Peak.

The transportations mentioned in the itinerary of the Pikey peak developed by the Mountain Ram Adventures team will include all the necessary commutes required to complete the trek. The commutes are:

The Pikey Peak offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the himalayan range ranging from Eastern Nepal all the way to the Mid Western Himalayas.

Yes the facility of Mobile networks and Internet will be there during the trek but the signal might fluctuate and not be stable. If you are planning to use a mobile network then you can purchase a Nepali sim from either NTC (Government owned) or NCell (private company) as both of them have wide coverage and signal.

The clean drinking water is available in tea houses scattered in the routes. Make sure to fill your flask or water bottles up for the journey. Do not consume water directly from water bodies and streams and only drink them after using a filtration tablet or other means.

    The pickup and drop from/ to Tribhuvan International Airport will be a complimentary service on behalf of the Mountain Ram Adventures team. The team members will be assisting you with your baggage and hotel formalities to make sure you have a comfortable journey as possible. Any detours requested by the clients during the trip might incur in some additional charges.

  3. Safety and Security during the Pikey Peak Trek:
    The Pikey Peak trek is a relatively safe trekking destination. The trek takes place in the Eastern highlands of Nepal within the Solukhumbu District. Even though the Trekking Routes are relatively new the trekking routes are safe. The trip with the Mountain Ra Adventures team will be comfortable as the journey will be pre planned including all the necessary reservations and arrangements made to ensure your comfort and safety. Coordination and awareness from your side will be greatly appreciated as it will greatly improve the safety and smooth sailing of the trip. Also have a brief knowledge about the terrains, weather, routes so that you will have a reasonable expectation.

  4. Required minimum age to travel:
    There are no such age restrictions during the pikey peak trek. The Pikey Peak trek can be done by anyone who is physically and mentally prepared. The trekkers below the age of 16 should be accompanied by a legal guardian to participate in the trek. The trek is comfortable so the senior citizens can also participate in the trek. 

  5. Solo traveler:
    Solo trekking in Nepal is banned by the Government of Nepal as of 2023, So solo trekkers are required to trek with a licensed guide and a porter (if necessary). Here at the Mountain Ram Adventures we will provide you with a guide or a guide/ porter for your trek. The guide will ensure that you have a comfortable and smooth journey while providing information about the local culture, terrains, climate, Himalayas and many more.    

  6. Pikey Peak Cost:
    The cost of the Pikey Peak trek for a solo traveler is 900 USD whereas it decreases significantly if the number of pax in the group ranges from 2-6  then it is 750 USD per person and above 6 pax the price is 700 USD per person.   7. Accommodations and Meals available during the Pikey Peak Trek:
    The accommodations available during the trek are Tea houses which are operated by the local and hospitable Sherpas. We provide you with a twin sharing room during the trek. The tea house accommodations give you an opportunity to experience the lifestyle of the locals of that area. You will be provided with accommodations in a 3 star category hotel while in Kathmandu.

    The Mountain Ram Adventures will be providing you with 3 meals per day during your trip (breakfast, lunch and dinner). The meals available during the trek are highly nutritious and filling. The meals in the high Himalayas usually range from Nepali, Indian and Tibetan cuisine foods prepared with a local twist. The prominent food available in any trekking routes or even most of the household in Nepal is Dal Bhat which is a rice dish served with lentil soup, curries and achar (Nepali pickle). Other dishes available on the trek are Noodles, Stew/soup, Curries, Tenduk, Chowmin, Fry Rice and many more.

    *Note: If you are a solo trekker and don't want to share a room with others then inform us beforehand so that we can make the necessary arrangement for your comfort. During the peak season the single room cannot be guaranteed but we will try our best to arrange it.

  9. Pikey Peak Trek Difficulty:
    Pikey Peak trek is a relatively comfortable journey with not so steep incline and decline and falls under the Moderate Trek category. The trek takes place within the eastern subalpine forests of Nepal during which the highest point is 4065 M at Pikey Peak. During the trek we will cover around 70 KM trekking with an average of 12 KM for around 5-6 hours every day. You will be assisted by a skilled licensed guide for your trek so the trek will be a smooth journey filled with relaxation and great view of the Himalayas. If you are planning to trek in the monsoon/ Summer season or the Winter season then the difficulty and risk of the trek will increase slightly as the trails will be usually muddy with unpredictable weather and many other factors.

  10. Best time to trek in the Pikey Peak Trail:
    The Pikey Peak Trek is one of the newer established trekking routes located in the lower Everest region. The trek offers stunning views of the Great Himalayan Trail from Eastern Nepal to the Mid-Western Nepal. The onlookers are greeted with the glorious sight of the mountains from the Pikey Peak. To experience the best the Pikey Peak has to offer make sure to travel during the Spring season and the Autumn season as it is considered to be the best time to trek in the Himalayas.

    Pikey Peak trek during Autumn Season: Arguably the best season to trek in Nepal is the Autumn season which falls in the month of September, October and November during which time the skies are clear providing pristine views of the Himalayas. The weather during the Autumn  is quite pleasant and is usually predictable. The risk of avalanche and landslides are also at its lowest. During the late October and Early November you can expect light snowfall as the winter season will be soon arriving. Even though the trekking route is newly established you can experience light traffic in the trekking route during this time.

    Pikey Peak Trek during Spring Season: The Spring season in Nepal consists of the months of March, April and May. During the spring season the trekking route filled with lush green Rhododendron forest turns into a vibrant and aromatic trail filled with blooming Rhododendron flowers turning the routes into a dreamy paradise. The wild flowers along with the Rhododendron flowers significantly increases the beauty of the trek. During the Spring season the weather is also predictable and rarely fluctuates much. The views seen during this season are also precious as there are relatively less clouds to disrupt the views of the High Himalayas. 

    Pikey Peak trek during Winter Season: The weather of the High Himalayas can be punishing if necessary preparations are not done for the winter trekking. The months of December, January and February fall under the winter season in the High Himalayas. During the Winter season the weather can reach below freezing at times at higher altitude and the trekking routes above the altitude of 3000M will usually be covered in snow. Even though the weather during this time is harsh, the beauty of the trails and views of the high himalayas and mountains around covered in snow is a sight to behold.

    Pikey Peak Trek during Summer Season: The season of Summer and Monsoon can be experienced at the same time in Nepal which falls in the months of April, June and July.  During the Monsoon season the trekking trails are muddy, slippery and filled with leeches. The Monsoon season is considered to be the worst season for trekking in Nepal as the weather is not clear and the views are also blocked with dark and gloomy clouds. The risk of landslides is also at its maximum during this time. The lush green forest seen during the trek is quite blissful as well  as the air is quite fresh but humid. The threat of thunderstorms is also quite high which makes it an unfavorable time to trek.

  11. Pikey Peak Trek Insurance:
    The travel insurance is not made mandatory for trekking in Nepal yet inorder to trek to the Pikey Peak with the Mountain Ram Adventures you need to have a travel insurance. The High Himalayas can be punishing at times with unseen circumstances like weather, landslides, altitude sickness and more. The travel insurance acts as a safety net for the trekkers and allows the guides to make crucial decisions without any hesitations. The use of travel insurance might not seem appealing to some trekkers and not worthy but it’s better safe than sorry in the harsh conditions of the Himalayas.

  12. Risk during Pikey Peak Trek:
    Pikey Peak trek is one of the safest choices for trekkers where they can enjoy the views of the Great Himalayan Trail with just light trekking. Even though the route is considered as a safe one it is always crucial to stay alert of the surrounding while trekking. You will be assisted by a skilled guide so the journey will be relaxing and comfortable as they are quite familiar with the routes and terrins.
    1. Indigestion:  The trekking route is filled with tea houses where you can find dishes which range from Nepali, Indian and Tibetan Cuisine. The meals usually are nutritious and comforting yet can cause indigestion due to many reasons such as sudden change in diet and consumption of water without filtration. Make sure to have enough to fuel you up for your trek and if you have any allergies and medical conditions then make sure to inform your guides and porters to ensure there are no any emergencies regarding it.
    2. Altitude sickness:  Even though the risk of Altitude sickness is quite low during the trek there is still a slim chance so, if you face any of the symptoms of Altitude sickness like dizziness, shortness of breath, lack of body coordination, headache, lightheadedness etc. then make sure to inform your guide about it as they are well skilled and capable enough to handle the situation.

  13. Personal Expenses and Emergency Fund:
    The personal expenses and emergency fund are not covered by the Mountain Ram Adventures team. The trekkers are requested to carry a certain amount of money for personal expenses ranging around 5 USD per day for snacks, shower, charging and many more and for emergency funds the trekkers are requested to carry around 150 USD for any unseen events which might cause change in the itinerary.  Make sure to carry the amount in local currency (Nepalese Rupee)

  14. Issues during Arrival:
    If you face any problems during your flight to Nepal like flight delay or cancellation then make sure to inform the Mountain Ram Adventures Team as soon as possible as we will need to reschedule accordingly. If you are finding it difficult to locate the team members then make sure to contact us via the number we will provide you or ask for assistance with the airport security as well.

  16.  Visa Requirements:
    To obtain the Visa of Nepal is quite a hassle free process as you can apply for the visa through the consultant office of Nepal or the Embassy of Nepal in your respective country. The provision of visa on arrival is also there for the citizens of some countries  which makes the journey even much hassle free. To check whether you are eligible or not make sure to check the website of Department of  Immigration Nepal at Department of Immigration 

  17. Money Exchange:
    During your trek for personal expenses and emergency fund make sure to carry it in Local Currency as it is the only form of payment in the Himalayas. You can exchange the currency through Money exchanges and even ATMs. Make sure to check the exchange rate before exchanging the money for your personal benefit. You can withdraw the local currency from the ATMs as well but 2-4% extra is charged by the bank as transaction fee.

  18. Essentials and Laundry Service:
    Make sure to pack accordingly for the trip with essential equipment and warm clothes. The Mountain Ram Adventures team will provide you with a shortlist of all the items which are necessary for the trek before the commencement of the trip. After the trek when we return back to Kathmandu you can do the laundry at the hotels or other independent laundry service providers around the Thamel area.
    *Note: Laundry service is personal expenses and its cost is not included in the itinerary.
  1. Common Tourist Courtesy of the traveler during the trip:
    1. While introducing yourself to someone, begin with a “Namaste” which means hello in Nepali language. 
    2. Make sure to take off your shoes while visiting a temple, shrine, stupa or someone's house and while going around the temples make sure to go around in a clockwise direction.
    3. Always dress modestly
    4. Follow the instructions and guidelines of the guides so as not to upset the locals and other visitors.
    5. Showing public affection is frowned upon in Nepal as it is considered a sacred and private matter.
    6. Use “Dai” for male vendors or locals and “Didi” for female vendors or locals which translates to brother and sister respectively.
