Everest Khumjung trek is a great short alternative to the usual Everest routes and gives a chance to visit some of the unique Sherpa villages of the Solu Khumbu region.
Taking the main route towards Everest base camp, you will be following in the footsteps of many famous mountaineers to arrive at the regions’ main town of Namche Bazaar. Perched on the hillside in the shape of a horseshoe, Namche Bazaar is a delight to explore. The trek from Namche Bazaar to Thame takes you away from the main Everest route and hugs to hillside and follows the contour around to Thame and its famous monastery which sits on the hillside above the town and is well worth a visit.
The village of Khumjung is situated near the peak of Khumbila, from which this region derives its name. The local monastery is well known for housing what is purported to be the scalp of the infamous yeti. The local school was built in 1961 as the first major project of the Himalayan Trust, set up by Sir Edmund Hilary. It has beome a major school in the area, growing from the initial 2 classrooms, to now catering for pre-school, primary and secondary sections with over 350 students. Since then the Himalayan Trust has built over 25 schools and assisted many more within the Solu Khumbu District.
