Detail About Upper Dolpo Trek

"Step into a mystical world where ancient Buddhist and Bonpo traditions intertwine with shamanistic influences. As the remotest and least-developed region in Nepal, Upper Dolpo's culture, landscape, and ethnicity are reminiscent of Tibet and Tibetans, making it a remarkable destination to explore. The Upper Dolpo trek is an adventure not to be missed by any avid traveler seeking to explore the untouched and undisturbed parts of the Himalayas."

Nestled between the towering Dhaulagiri mountain ranges and the Tibetan Plateau lies the remote northwest region of Dolpo in Nepal. The Upper Dolpo trek, as its name implies, explores the upper part of this area, which is even more isolated and seldom visited. As the Upper Dolpo trek was opened in the late 1980s, the region still falls under the category of a restricted area, requiring a special permit for entry.

The Upper Dolpo trek offers an incredible adventure, passing through stunning landscapes and remarkable cultural sites. From the captivating Phoksundo Lake and the ancient Shey Gompa to the fascinating Bon Po practitioners and renowned Buddhist monasteries, the Upper Dolpo region has a lot to offer. During the Dolpo trek, you will get to witness majestic views of Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m/26,795 ft), Mt. Annapurna (8,091 m/26,545 ft), and Mt. Crystal (2,137 m/7,012 ft).

*Fun facts: Upper Dolpo is mentioned in Peter Matthiessen's book "The Snow Leopard" and Eric Valli's film 'Himalaya'.

Despite Upper Dolpo's arid and rugged terrain, it is graced with a network of fast-flowing rivers, cascading waterfalls, deep river gorges, verdant meadows, and cultivated valleys. The Upper Dolpo trek route is considered one of the best off-the-beaten-path treks in Nepal. The remote villages dotting the landscape provide insight into the fascinating BonPo religion and other intriguing cultures.

Likewise, the exquisite turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake (3,620 m/11,876 ft) are an absolute delight to behold. A portion of the Upper Dolpo trek route goes through the Shey Phoksundo National Park, which is a protected area & home to exotic wildlife like snow leopards, Himalayan blue sheep, goral, tahr, and Himalayan black bear.

Our 24 days long Upper Dolpo trek is not for the faint-hearted, given the challenging terrain, which consists of steep, high, unstable, and sometimes barely-there trails. The trek requires considerable stamina, high fitness levels, and sheer determination, as you will be covering long distances at high altitudes and crossing several high passes. However, for those willing to take on the challenge, the Upper Dolpo trek is an unforgettable adventure of a lifetime.

The trek to the far-western Upper Dolpo region of Nepal will take you to one of the Himalayas' most secluded areas. The lack of tourism infrastructure in Dolpo means you have to be self-sufficient in case there is no accommodation available. We, Mountain Ram Adventure, organize both the camping Upper Dolpo trek and the tea house Upper Dolpo trek.

The Upper Dolpo trek: an adventure that explores the last preserved Tibetan culture in the trans-Himalayan region of Nepal

The Upper Dolpo trekking experience is unique in its cultural and geographical setting. Situated in the trans-Himalayan region of Nepal, this land is remote and isolated from the rest of the country. Due to its proximity to Tibet, Upper Dolpo's culture, landscape, and ethnicity are heavily influenced by Tibetan traditions. This makes it one of the few places in the world where Tibetan culture is well-preserved on this side of the Himalayas.

The main highlight of the Upper Dolpo trek 24 days is the journey to Shey Gompa Monastery, which is located deep in the heart of Dolpo valley. This 11th-century monastery belongs to the Kagyupa sect. It was founded by Lama Ten-Szin-Ra-Pa. The name Shey, which means vivid, crystal, and pure in Tibetan, perfectly describes the beauty and spiritual significance of this monastery.

Today, the Shey Gompa Monastery is in the care of the Chiba community. This trekking route is not only popular for its religious significance but also for its stunning natural landscapes, deep valleys, crystal-clear lakes, and rushing rivers. The Upper Dolpo trek also provides a unique opportunity to interact with the friendly and hospitable people of Dolpo region, who have preserved their cultural heritage for centuries.
