This is the second most popular trekking area situated in the Eastern part of Nepal. The trekking area is covered by the 1148 sq km Sagarmatha National Park. With elevation ranges of 2845 – 8848 m, the landscape is broken into deep gorges and glacial valleys with stunning mountain views Mt. Everest (or Sagarmatha, the Nepali name), Lhotse,Nuptse, Cho Oyu, Amadablam and Pumari to name but a few.
It is the land of the famed Sherpas and home to a wide variety of mammals, such as the Himalayan tahr and musk deer and many different species of birds. The region has vegetation graduating from pine, hemlock, fir, juniper, birch, rhododendrons and shrubs to alpine plants and then to bare rock and snow. Treks pass through traditional villages and offer a competitive choice of well run, efficient lodges, in which to relax at the end of each day's hike and soak of the local atmosphere.
Trekking in this region starts either from the town of Jiri, accessible from Kathmandu by bus or private jeep, or from Lukla, a short flight from Kathmandu. Some of the populartreks in this area are listed below.
