Detail About Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit Trek

The Manaslu circuit was opened in 1995, whereas the Tsum valley trail started welcoming trekkers only in 2008. This 21 days trekking program in Nepal takes you to one of the most beautiful and remotest parts of the Himalayas, the Manaslu region. The Tsum valley Manaslu circuit trek is the best trek in Nepal if you want to embark on a less crowded yet equally adventurous and a lifetime journey.

This trek is a fascinating venture into the ancient Tibetan Buddhism realm. The trail is packed with ascents and descents via lush rhododendron and bamboo forests. You will cross the rushing Budhi Gandaki river numerous times throughout the trek. Likewise, the overnight stay in the picturesque villages lets you get close to the natives and have a glimpse of their life.

Every day, you will trek for approximately 6 hours exploring the exotic vegetation and fauna of the Manaslu Conservation Area. The snow leopard is one of the exclusive wildlife of this region, and you may get to see one if you are lucky. Likewise, on the way, you will come across many ancient stupas, chortens, and monasteries.

With each day passing, the trek gets difficult, and the views get better. As the trail goes through different climatic zones, you will get to witness a wide range of landscapes. The Tsum valley area is much more rugged and offbeat. And the mountains dominate the entire valley. Ganesh Himal (7,422 m/24,350 ft), Sringi Himal (7,155 m/23,474 ft), Simnang Himal (6,158 m/20,203 ft), Annapurna II (7,937 m/26,040 ft), Mt. Kang Guru (6,981 m/22,904 ft), Mt. Manaslu ( 8,163 m/26,781 ft), Himalchuli (7,893 m/25,896 ft), etc, are some of the Himalayan mountains seen on this trek.

Unlike the bustling mainstream routes, the Manaslu circuit and Tsum valley trek offers a trekking experience that is raw and authentic. Here, nature is untouched by the hands of commercialization. The landscapes are breathtaking, with snow-capped peaks and lush green meadows stretching as far as the eye can see.

Following our Tsum valley Manaslu circuit trek itinerary, you will trek through verdant forests, rough cliff sides, small settlements, lovely meadows, cross a high mountain pass, rugged moraines, and enjoy tranquility at the shore of stunning alpine lakes.

Why are Manaslu Circuit and Tsum valley a restricted area?

The Tsum valley Manaslu circuit trail takes trekkers close to the Tibetan border. The preservation of territorial boundaries and the safeguarding of national security has made this area restricted. Furthermore, the Manaslu region has a delicate ecosystem, relatively untouched by modernization.

The traditional way of life, cultural heritage, and customs of the tribes inhabiting these villages remain remarkably preserved. By designating the region as restricted, the Nepalese government aims to preserve the authenticity and splendor of this ancient way of life, protecting it from potential disruptions that mass tourism might bring.

Some of the common foods you can enjoy during the trek include dal bhat, chow-mein, momo, thukpa, thenduk, Tibetan bread, omelets, pasta, and pancakes, among others.

In addition to delicious meals, every teahouse provides boiled drinking water, allowing you to refill your water bottles and stay hydrated during the trek. While boiled water is available, some teahouses may charge a nominal fee for this service. To further ensure the safety of your drinking water, we advise using a water purification tablet.

Transportation

We use the local bus for commuting between the starting and ending points of the trek as specified in our itinerary. In addition to the local transportation during the trek, we offer a complimentary airport pick-up and drop-off service.

Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit Trek Permits

To embark on the Manaslu circuit trek, trekkers need to obtain three main permits, all of which are included in our package cost. These permits are essential to ensure your legal entry into the Manaslu region and to support the conservation efforts of the respective areas.

These permits are as follows:

Manaslu Restricted Permit (Manaslu RAP):

  1. September to November: USD 100 per person for the first seven days and an additional USD 15 per person per day from the eighth day onwards.
  2. December to August: USD 75 per person for the first seven days and an additional USD 10 per person per day from the eighth day onwards.

Manaslu Conservation Area Project Permit (MCAP): USD 30 per person.
Annapurna Conservation Area Project Permit (ACAP): USD 30 per person.

*Note:
i) You do not need a TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card for the Manaslu circuit trek. However, if you plan to continue trekking from Dharapani to the Annapurna circuit, you will require a TIMS card for that portion of the trek.

ii) While the Manaslu circuit trek does not require a TIMS permit, it is necessary to have an Annapurna Conservation Area Project Permit for the latter part of the trek. The trail from Dharapani to Besisahar falls under the Annapurna Conservation Area, requiring the ACAP permit.

Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficulty

The Manaslu circuit Tsum valley trek stands as one of the most challenging and demanding treks in Nepal. Its rugged and remote location, along with the unforgiving terrain, makes it a tough expedition. The scarcity of service providers along the trail adds to the level of difficulty faced by trekkers.

The minimum daily trekking hours is 6-7 hours, covering distances of 11 km to 15 km every day. Likewise, the Himalayan weather and climate can be unpredictable, posing additional challenges during the trek. Narrow cliffs and steep tracks demand careful walking, while the increasing altitude can add more physical strain and may affect trekkers' well-being.

To take on the Manaslu circuit Tsum valley trek, one must possess excellent endurance, stamina, and physical strength. Preparing both physically and mentally for this adventure is crucial. With determination, proper preparation, and the guidance of experienced professionals, trekkers can conquer this challenging trail.

The best time to trek Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit

The Manaslu circuit Tsum Valley trail traverses through six distinct climatic zones, each contributing to a diverse range of temperatures and weather conditions. Winter is the most challenging time for trekking, with extremely cold temperatures making the upper part of the trail inhospitable, and many tea houses remain closed during this season.

Similarly, the unpredictable weather, heavy rainfall, and potential landslide hazards of the summer/monsoon season make it a less favorable time for a trek in the Manaslu region. Spring and autumn seasons are considered the best time for the Manaslu circuit Tsum valley trek. These two seasons have moderate temperatures, lush forests, and clear skies, creating a picturesque and delightful journey.

*Do note that you have to be prepared for weather variations and the possibility of sudden changes throughout the year, regardless of the season chosen for the trek.

Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit Trek in Spring (March to May)

Spring is the ideal time to embark on the Manaslu circuit Tsum valley trek 21 days. The weather is stable with a moderate climate, perfect for a remarkable trekking experience. Likewise, the mountain views are stunning, thanks to the clear sky.

The day temperature varies from 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F). The nights and mornings are cold, with an average temperature of 5°C (41°F). The highlight of trekking in spring is the blooming rhododendron forests in the lower part of the trail. The greenery, thousands of flowers, and warmth in the air make trekking fabulous.

Tsum Valley Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit Trek in Summer/Monsoon (June to August)

Following spring, Nepal transitions into the summer/monsoon season, which is considered an off-season for trekking in the Himalayas. The summer/monsoon season brings unpredictable weather, harsh climate conditions, and other challenges like heavy rainfall, which makes the Manaslu trek even more demanding.

During the day, temperatures range from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). The night sees around 10°C (50°F). While the summer/monsoon season presents additional challenges, it offers a unique perspective of the Manaslu region and its natural beauty.

Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit Trek in Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is undoubtedly the second-best time to embark on the Manaslu circuit Tsum valley trek. As the monsoon season ends, the weather becomes more pleasant and stable. During the months of October and November, the climate is particularly fantastic.

Beyond the favorable weather, autumn is a festive season in Nepal. The Nepalese people celebrate their major festivals, such as Dashain, Tihar, Chhat, and more. During the day, temperatures range from 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F), providing comfortable trekking conditions. However, as night falls, the temperature drops significantly to around 0°C (32°F), creating a much cooler environment.

Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit Trek in Winter (December to February)

Winter is another very challenging time to do Manaslu circuit trekking. The heavy snowfall during this season makes the trail slippery, and certain sections may be blocked due to snow accumulation. Additionally, the region is at high risk of avalanches during winter.

The temperature during the day ranges from 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F), and it can plummet to -10°C (14°F) during the night. One of the most enchanting aspects of trekking the Manaslu circuit in winter is the mesmerizing snow-capped mountain vistas. The landscape transforms into a hidden winter wonderland.

Trek Tips

  1. Internet: The internet facility along the Manaslu circuit Tsum valley trek route is limited because of the remote and isolated nature of the region. To improve your communication experience, we recommend carrying a Nepali sim card to access cellular data while trekking. However, please note that the internet connectivity may not be consistently strong throughout the trail.

  4. ATM: While on the trek, note that there are no ATMs available. We recommend withdrawing the necessary amount of money in Kathmandu before starting the trek.
  5. Luggage: Any extra belongings can be left at your hotel's locker room during the trek. For the trek itself, we provide strong duffel bags to carry your essentials. Each trekker is allowed a maximum weight limit of 10 kg for the duffel bag and 5 kg for the daypack.

Before the trip commences, please ensure to send us the documents verifying your travel insurance coverage. Also, carry these documents with you during the trek, as they may be required for reference or assistance in case of any emergencies.

Risks During Tsum Valley Manaslu Trek

The Tsum valley Manaslu circuit trek is an adventurous journey through remote and rugged terrain. This trekking route has limited services, and the trail is quite remote, lacking basic tourist infrastructure like health facilities, etc. The trail is offbeat and steep, with many landslide-prone areas. If you are not careful while trekking, there is a chance of you getting minor injuries.

Our experienced and trained guide will be with you all time to ensure your safety. Follow his instructions and be careful while navigating steep slopes. Verify the meat quality and purify the water using a water purification tablet before consuming.

Preventing Altitude Sickness (AMS) during the hike

Just a few simple actions can help you acclimatize and minimize the risk of altitude sickness. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoid excessive physical exertion during the initial days of the trek. Listen to your body and inform your guide immediately if you experience any symptoms of AMS, such as headaches or dizziness.

  1. drink plenty of water and other fluids
  2. maintain your pace and do not rush

Do note that travelers from certain countries are not eligible for this on-arrival visa provision. So, before leaving your country, please check the visa requirements for your country.

If your country is not eligible for the on-arrival visa, you will need to apply for the Nepalese tourist visa at the Embassy or Consulate office of Nepal in your home country. We, Mountain Ram Adventures, provide you with a trip confirmation letter, however we cannot guarantee the approval of your tourist visa.

The trip confirmation letter can be used as part of your visa application process, but the grant of the visa is subject to the policies and decisions of the Nepalese authorities. Laundry

In Kathmandu, laundry service is available in your hotel room for an additional cost, which is not included in the package cost. However, if you're looking for a more economical option, there are various laundry services at a lower price in Thamel. Typically, you can get your laundry done for approximately USD 5 to USD 10.

During the trek, it's rare to come across places where you can wash and dry your clothes before the next day's trek. So, we advise you to pack breathable trekking clothes that can easily dry in case they get wet.
It is always wise to carry an extra pair of underwear and use a dry bag to store used clothing. This way, you can maintain hygiene and have fresh clothes for the duration of the trek.

Money Exchange

In Thamel, you will find numerous money exchange centers where you can conveniently convert your currency to Nepali rupees. Stay updated with the exchange rates and choose a reliable exchange center that offers competitive rates and low service charges.

Additionally, if you prefer a more official approach, you can visit a local bank to get your money exchanged. Banks typically provide reliable and secure currency exchange services.

Another option is to withdraw Nepali cash from ATMs. All ATMs in Nepal are equipped to support international cards, allowing you to withdraw money with ease. Although there may be a small transaction fee for using ATMs, it is a convenient and widely used method by travelers.

Emergency Fund

Allocate some emergency funds for unexpected situations during your trip. Keep your backup money easily accessible. It will give you additional peace of mind during traveling in Nepal. If you don't end up needing to use the emergency funds, you can take them back with you.
