What sets the Khopra Danda trekking apart from other treks in the Annapurna region is its serene and peaceful nature. It's perfect for trekkers who have a limited amount of time but still want to experience the beauty of the Himalayas in a secluded and quiet environment. The trek can be completed in just 12 days, making it an excellent option for those on a tight schedule.

The main highlight of the Khopra Danda trek 12 days is the Khayer Lake, located at an altitude of 4,660 meters (15,290 feet), which is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. The trail to the lake is offbeat, especially in the last part, but the stunning views of the Annapurna Himalayas will keep you company.

The Khopra Danda trek Nepal also offers a chance to immerse yourself in the local culture and interact with the friendly and welcoming locals. The trek takes you through thick rhododendron forests, which are particularly beautiful in March and April when the rhododendron flowers are in full bloom.

Overall, the Khopra trek is an excellent choice for those seeking a short, quiet, and rewarding trekking experience in the western Himalayas of Nepal.

Extend your Khopra danda trek to Annapurna base camp or Mardi Himal

For those who want to extend their trekking adventure, there is an option to combine the Khopra Ridge trek with the popular Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek. From Tadapani or Ghandruk, you can continue along the ABC trek, taking in even more stunning views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes.

If you're feeling particularly adventurous, you can also venture further across onto the Mardi Himal Trek. This trail is lesser-known and more remote, but it offers a unique and challenging trekking experience with spectacular views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

Combining the Khopra Danda trek with the ABC and Mardi Himal treks provides an excellent opportunity to explore more of the beautiful Nepalese landscape while challenging yourself physically and mentally. With a variety of trekking options available, there's something for everyone to enjoy on this unforgettable journey.

A community trek in the Annapurna region

The Khopra Danda trek is not only a stunning and unique experience, but it's also part of a greater initiative to support sustainable tourism in the region. This initiative is called the Annapurna Dhaulagiri Community trek, which was created by Mahabir Pun, a local to the area, who is known as 'the man who brought the internet to rural Nepal.

In 2001, Mahabir contacted the BBC and began a project with the help of international donors to establish high-speed wireless internet connections to many of the villages along the trek. Since then, he has worked on several sustainable livelihood projects, including the establishment of community-run trekking lodges.

The idea behind this initiative is that all money generated from these lodges goes back into local schools and health clinics, supporting the community in a sustainable way. The Khopra Danda trail is just one section of this community trek, which offers a unique and authentic experience to travelers while also supporting the local economy.

If you're interested in learning more about this initiative, Mahabir also has a not-for-profit restaurant called Mahabir Dai's in Thamel, Kathmandu. Here, you can find maps and information about the community trek and other ways to support Mahabir's projects.

Overall, the Khopra Ridge trek is not just a beautiful trek but also a chance to support sustainable tourism and give back to the local community. It's a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of Nepal while making a positive impact.

Why go on the Khopra Danda trek?

If you're looking for an alternative to the ever-popular treks in the Annapurna region, the Khopra Danda trek is definitely worth considering. This single community lodge is situated right on the edge of a ridge, providing stunning views of two of the highest mountains in the world.

Despite its breathtaking scenery, the Khopra Danda trek in Nepal remains relatively unknown and is a great option for those looking to escape the crowds. It's an underrated trek in the Himalayas that offers an authentic and off-the-beaten-path experience.

During the trek, you'll pass through beautiful rhododendron forests, quaint villages, and pastures with grazing yaks. The trail is well-maintained and not too challenging, making it accessible for most hikers. One of the highlights of the trek is the panoramic view from Khopra Danda (3,660 m/12,008 ft) and Poon Hill (3,210 m/10,530 ft).

Our Khopra Danda trek itinerary also combines a hike to Poon Hill before ascending to Khopra Ridge. Both are fantastic viewpoints that offer jaw-dropping mountain panoramas with striking sunrises. The Khopra Danda trek experience is truly unforgettable. From the warm hospitality of the locals to the stunning scenery, every moment is a highlight.

We highly recommend this trek to anyone looking for an authentic and unique experience in Nepal!

We will start our day with an exciting hike to Poon Hill viewpoint to witness a gorgeous sunrise. The hike will begin early in the morning, around 5 am, before breakfast. After a short 45-minute walk, we will reach the viewpoint just before dawn.

As we climb up, the sky starts to light up in the east, and the stars begin to fade behind the magnificent Annapurna range. The view from the top is breathtaking and definitely worth waking up early for. We will then return to the lodge for breakfast and start our trek for the day.

The route from Ghorepani goes downhill through a dense rhododendron forest with mesmerizing views of Dhaulagiri, Tukche, and Hiunchuli Himal. The first three hours are downhill, followed by a one-hour traverse through scattered villages and forests to reach the Swanta village.

Continuing our trek from Swanta, we will trek toward Ali Kharka. The trail winds up and down through the lush forest, offering glimpses of stunning waterfalls along the way. As we approach Ali Kharka, the trail steepens, and we need to cross a tiny stream.

From there, we will make a steady ascent through the forest to reach Dhan Kharka. Keep an ear out for the roar of spotted deer and playful langur monkeys. The local villagers operate two community lodges, offering basic yet clean and comfortable accommodations for trekkers.

As you reach Khopra ridge, you'll be greeted with breathtaking views of the towering Dhaulagiri and the surrounding mountains. The north boasts walled mountains that are a sight to behold. After having lunch, you can rest and later explore the area.

  • 5-6 hours
  • Breakfast, lunch & dinner

After a delicious breakfast at Khopra Ridge, we embark on a day trip to Khayer Lake, a sacred pond of great importance to both Hindus and Buddhists. This divine lake is particularly popular among devotees who make an annual pilgrimage during July and August to offer sacrifices and take a dip in the cold waters for spiritual cleansing.

Our day hike to Khayer Lake starts from Khopra community lodge, with a steep ascent up the mountains before descending to the lake. The hike is challenging, but the magnificent views of the Annapurna mountain range, Machhapuchhre, and Dhaulagiri make it all worthwhile. The lush green valley that surrounds the lake is a peaceful and serene place to rest and soak in the beauty of nature.

We recommend bringing a packed lunch, sufficient drinks, and energy bars to keep up your energy levels, along with warm clothing to protect against cold temperatures. The glacier-melted Khayer Lake is not as large as Tilicho Lake and Gokyo Lake, but it's still a pretty sight to see. Yak and sheep graze around the lake, giving it a rustic charm.

The Khayer Lake route is well-paved and wide but icy and slippery from December to April. However, during the rest of the year, the pond has a beautiful turquoise color, making it an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts.

Stop for lunch at Bayeli, the only restaurant available on this stretch of the trek, which is open throughout the year. After lunch, Dobato is only a bit more than an hour's trek away. The route is very peaceful and often offers sightings of blue sheep, spotted deer, and Himalayan Monal before reaching Dobato.
