Detail About Dhaulagiri Trek

Dhaulagiri Trek is quite possibly the most difficult and challenging trek in Nepal, if not all of the world. The trails are often non-existent and certain parts of the trek may require the use of safety rope. Since only a handful of trekkers embark on this journey each year, you will be able to see and experience a side of Nepal that trekkers on more popular routes may have a difficult time witnessing. Dhaulagiri Trek brings you close to the nature and people of the region and is a truly rewarding experience. If you are up to the challenge, this route offers you some of the most unspoiled and dramatic scenery in Nepal. This difficult trek takes you around the Dhaulagiri Massif and ultimately Dhaulagiri 1 (8167m), the seventh highest mountain in the world. You will pass through awe-inspiring farmland and foothills before ascending several days through untouched rainforest, meadows and glacial moraine. After departing Dhaulagiri Base Camp, you will cross the challenging French Pass before sleeping in the Hidden Valley. The Hidden Valley is an arid valley situated above 5000 meters and is perhaps one of the most challenging and surreal locations visited on this trek. After departing the Hidden Valley, you cross the Dhampus Pass and begin the long descent down to Marpha via the grazing fields of Yak Kharka. This trek is graded as very hard and recommended (by Mountain Ram Adventures) for trekkers who have previous experience trekking over 5000m.

The Dhaulagiri trek is one of the isolated trekking routes of Nepal with less to none human interference making it one of the best available camping treks in the Himalayas for the trekkers. The trek can also be considered to be an ideal option for trekkers searching for intimidating views of the High Himalayas with challenging routes. The stunning views and the demanding trek makes it one of the must visit destinations for adventure and thrill seekers from all around the world. The Mountain Ram Adventures team ensures the trekkers have an unforgettable journey which will be enjoyable and comfortable as we will be assigning capable team members to the trekkers who will assist the trekkers throughout the entirety of the trek.

The lack of oxygen as well as the low atmospheric pressure can be challenging for the trekkers. The Dhaulagiri trek is a hidden gem with minimum human intervention making it one of the isolated camping trek destinations. Even for the regular trekkers the Dhaulagiri trek can be challenging and an unforgettable adventure.

  10. Best time for the Dhaulagiri Trek
In the High Himalayas the months of September to November (Autumn Season) and March to May (Spring Season) standout as the best time for trekking in the Himalayas. The Dhaulagiri trek can be completed all year around yet the challenging route can be much more strenuous during the months of June to July (Monsoon/ Summer season) and December to February (Winter season) as the weather in the High Himalayas can shift drastically.

Dhaulagiri Trek during the Autumn Season:
Considered to be the most pleasant and best time to trek in the Himalayan Region, the months of September to November is the busiest time in the Himalayas. The weather during the Autumn season is favorable as the views of the Himalayas are not disturbed by the clouds as the skies are usually clear providing stunning views of the Dhaulagiri Himalayan Range. The temperature during the Autumn season does not fluctuate much as rainfall is also scarce during this season. During the month of November the trekkers can also experience light snowfall and decrease in temperature as the end of November marks the beginning of the winter season in Nepal.

Dhaulagiri Trek during the Spring Season:
During the Spring season the views of the Himalayas are elevated by the blossoming wildflowers including the National flower of Nepal, Rhododendron. During the months of March to May the weather of the Dhaulagiri trekking trail is ideal for trekking as the skies are usually clear offering the mesmerizing views of the Dhaulagiri Himalayan Range. The trail of the route is filled with the automatic smell of the wildflowers as well as the  lush green trail is converted into vibrant shades of red by the Rhododendron flowers. Overall the trekkers participating in the Dhaulagiri trek during the Spring season can experience the mesmerizing views of the Himalayas blended with the best of flora and fauna of the region.

Dhaulagiri Trek during the Monsoon/ Summer Season:
In Nepal during the months of June to July the travelers can experience the monsoon and summer season at the same time. The monsoon season is considered to be the worst time to trek in Nepal as the chances of Landslides, Thunderstorms can increase the risk of trekking. During the monsoon season the skies are covered mostly by dark gloomy monsoon clouds which hide the majestic views of the Himalayas. During Monsoon season at the lower region of the trek the problems of bugs including leeches, mosquitos also demotivates the trekkers to participate  in the trek. The trekkers should compulsorily carry raincoats and waterproof gears during the monsoon season to withstand the heavy rainfall. The off beaten trails are muddy and slippery as well which increases the risk drastically. During the Dhaulagiri trek we will be crossing the rivers quite often which during the monsoon season water flow increases causing the risks to pile up. Even Though during the monsoon season Dhaulagiri trek is possible the weather conditions can be punishing at times. During the monsoon season however the air is refreshing as the cold breeze blended with the sound of rainfall in the jungle trail might be appealing to nature fanatics.

Dhaulagiri Trek during the Winter season:
During the Winter season the Himalayan terrain turns into a winter wonderland during which the thick blanket of snow covers the surrounding area. Even though during the winter season the trekking routes are covered by snow making it difficult to navigate yet the beauty of the Dhaulagiri trek during the winter season is jaw-dropping. During the months of December to late february the average temperature is around freezing so the trekkers planning to trek should pack heavy warm clothes and proper gears including micro spikes. The views of the Himalayan vista are also gorgeous as the intimidating peaks are covered with snow increasing the Himalayan beauty. However during the winter season the weather can be unbearable at times as at the upper region the weather goes well below the freezing point as well as the threat of avalanche is also there. Overall the winter season offers the scenic views of the true Himalayas but the risk and weather conditions make it difficult to trek making it not so desirable time for trekking.

  11. Dhaulagiri Trek tips
Dhaulagiri Trek is one of the isolated trekking destinations within the Himalayas of Nepal  where the human intervention is less to none. The trekkers will be staying in warm cozy tents almost throughout the trek so, the luxury of hot shower, charging electronics and other basic amenities found in the city area are not present. We suggest the trekkers carry a fully charged power bank with them which will help them charge up their electronics for the trip. Even though Dhaulagiri trek takes us to the base camp of the 7th highest Mountain of the world, basic facilities for accommodations and meals are not available in the trek so the trekkers will be staying in tents and have the meals prepared by the trek team. The trekkers are suggested to carry power bank, head lights, extra batteries for the trek.

  12. Guides and porters during Dhaulagiri Trek
Dhaulagiri trek is one of the toughest treks in the Himalayan region where the trekkers will be challenged to their absolute limit. So in order to participate in the trek the trekkers should be accompanied by guides and porters to elevate the stress and risk of the trek. The Mountain Ram Adventures team will assign you an experienced, English speaking guide (Licensed) and porters who will carry the camping gears for the trek. The trekkers personal luggage will also be carried by the porter (1 porter for 2 trekkers, 10KG each).

The guides and porters are the backbone of trekking in the Himalayas and without their contribution and dedication trekking will be seriously challenging or even impossible. Here at the Mountain Ram Adventures treat our guides and porters as family with respect and love so we request the trekkers to also treat them with respect and love for their dedications.

  13. Tipping the Guides and Porters
The Dhaulagiri Trek is a complex trek demanding physical and mental endurance of the trekkers. Trekkers cannot complete the Dhaulagiri trek without the assistance of skilled guides and porters accompanying them throughout  the trek. In the High Himalayas the trekkers show their appreciation towards their guide and porters by providing  them with handsome tips for assisting them throughout the trek. The amount of tips usually depends upon the service and satisfaction level of the clients towards their team.

  14. Insurance for Dhaulagiri Trek
To participate in the Dhaulagiri trek with the Mountain Ram Adventures team the trekkers must have travel insurance to cover for the cost of emergency medical attention or evacuations which might arise during the trip as it helps the guides and team leaders to make quick decisions without worrying about the cost. Even though the insurance is not compulsory as per the policies of the Government , the insurance acts as a safety net during any emergencies which might arise during the trip. The Dhaulagiri Trek takes us to altitude well above 5000M so the risk of altitude sickness is also there during which emergency evacuation and medical attention might be required and with the insurance it will be mostly or fully covered.

  15. Risk during Dhaulagiri Trek
    Indigestion
During the Dhaulagiri trek meals available during the trip will be cooked by the team members as there are no settlement areas in the higher region of the Dhaulagiri trek. The meals available in the trek will be hearty and nutritious as the team will prepare meals which will replenish the energy of the trekkers. The trekkers should inform their guides and porters if they have any allergies as complications might arise during the trip. During the trip the trekkers are requested to have proper meals as indigestion in the Himalayas can cause a lot of trouble. Don't drink water directly from the water bodies as it can also cause indigestion leading to health complications and make sure to drink them after properly filtering it only or boiling it.

    Acute Mountain Sickness
Dhaulagiri trek takes us to altitude well above 5000 M at which the oxygen level is around 50% of sea level and the atmospheric pressure is also quite low which can cause altitude sickness in some cases even complex problems like HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema) and HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema) which requires medical attention as soon as possible. So if the trekkers are feeling light headedness, dizziness, Nauseous, Loss of body coordination, headache make sure to inform your guide and porter about it as soon as possible so they can medically assess you.

    Landslides and Avalanches
During the Winter and Summer/Monsoon season the risk of Avalanche and Landslide significantly increases. We ask for the awareness from the trekkers' side as well as in the high Himalayas any unseen events can arise at any time. If any unforeseen events arise the guides and group leaders will take decisions which can change the course of the fixed itinerary so we request understanding from the trekkers during such events.

  16. Personal expenses and Emergency fund
During the trip personal expenses and emergency fund might not be much necessary at the higher elevation as there are no settlement areas, however in the lower regions of the trek the trekkers can enjoy some additional facilities and services.  We suggest the clients have local currency (NPR) worth around 10-20 USD per day separate for personal expenses and around 200 USD equivalent in NPR as emergency funds during your trek as we might need to extend our stay during any circumstances.
