Tamang Heritage trek is a journey to the lowlands of the Langtang Valley giving the trekkers a chance to indulge themself with the culture and lifestyle of the indigenous Tamang community. The trek takes us through lush green forest of the midlands of Nepal providing us with stunning views of the snow capped peaks of the Langtang and Ganesh Himalayan Range.
The Tamang Heritage Trail is a short and comfortable trek in comparison to other mainstream trekking destinations within the Langtang Valley yet still providing stunning views of the High Himalayas. The trek takes us through the abundant green forest of the midlands of the valley covered in ancient rhododendron trees and wildflowers. We will be trekking mostly on the offbeat trails occasionally filled with stone steps (stairway) which merge with the off road motor ways in some parts of the trek. The trail is filled with scattered settlements of the indigenous local people of the Tamang community which is one of the main highlights of the trek.
The Tamang community of Nepal are the descendants of the Tibetan tribes who migrated to Nepal during the ancient time and settled in the Langtang region. The name Tamang comes from Tibetan words “Ta” which means horse and “Mak” which means warriors as during the ancient times they were intimidating warriors who fought battles while riding on their horses. The trek takes us through ancient settlements of the Tamang community built meticulously in traditional structures giving us an opportunity to witness the culture and lifestyle of the indigenous community from a close-up. Exploring the village of Gatlang which is one of the oldest settlements of the valley gives us an inside of the way of living of the locals, the trekkers can see the locals making clothes by traditional methods as well. During the visit to Gatlang Village the trekkers can also visit the ancient monastery and the Parbati Kunda which is at a hiking distance from Gatlang village.

As you arrive to the hustling and vibrant city of Kathmandu via Tribhuvan International Airport the representatives of Mountain Ram Adventures team will be eagerly waiting for your arrival at the terminal. The representatives will be assisting you with the luggages and will be transferring you to your assigned hotel (usually in Thamel) via a private vehicle. The team will be assisting you with the check in procedures. Freshen up and explore the vibrant city of Thamel where the western and local culture is infused with one another creating a perfect blend for travelers recreation and enjoyment. If you are missing any essential items for the trek then you can purchase or rent the items from the local vendors.
The valley of Kathmandu has continuously served as the hotspot of cultural and historical events of the country from ancient times, boasting monuments carrying significant cultural and religious value. On our second day we will be going on a sightseeing tour visiting four of the UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Sites which will begin after having our breakfast and end at around 4-5 PM. You will be assisted by an English speaking cultural guide during your sightseeing tour who will give you the factual details as well as some myths and stories related to the monuments. After the conclusion of the tour we will be dropping you back to your hotel, freshen up as afterwards you will be meeting with the team members of the Mountain Ram Adventures at the head office to have a brief discussion about the trip.
Highlights of the city Tour:
On the third day of our trip we will be heading towards the starting point of our trek, Syabrubesi which is around 122 KM towards the northside of the capital city, Kathmandu. Syabrubesi is a small settlement in the Rasuwa district of Nepal and is the starting point of most of the trekking routes to the Langtang region. The journey to Syabrubesi is around 7 hours long, filled with scenic sights of the lush green hills and Glimpses of the Snow capped peaks of the Langtang and Ganesh Himalayan Range. The ride takes us through the Prithivi Highway till Galchi from where we will be making a sharp right turn towards Syabrubesi. The road is filled with sharp turns and ascends until we reach Dhunche after which we will descend towards Syabrubesi.
After having our breakfast at Syabrubesi, we will be heading towards Gatlang Village which will officially mark the beginning of our trek. The trek begins with a steep ascent of the hill towards the Goljung village after which we will be trekking on the off road motorway which leads us towards Gatlang Village. The trek to Gatlang will take around 5-6 hours during which we will be covering a total distance of around 17 KM. After reaching the Village we will be exploring the village for a bit. Gatlang village is an ancient Tamang settlement also known as “Black village” as the roof of the traditional houses of the village used to be covered by wood which turned black. As of the earthquake of 2015 AD Gatlang village was one of the most affected villages as many ancient traditional houses were destroyed after which the houses were built using tin sheds as roofs which are slowly being replaced by black woods as the restoration process is ongoing.
After having our breakfast we will be heading out of the beautiful Gatlang Village and will be trekking towards the village of Tatopani we will be descending towards the village of Chillime resting for a bit and then ascending toward the village of Tatopani. Tatopani literal translation is Hot Water and is named as there is a natural hot spring where the trekkers of the Langtang region dipped themself replenishing their energy after their trek. Sadly after the earthquake of 2015 AD the water flow to the hot spring was blocked and is still out of service.
After enjoying our breakfast at Tatopani we will be heading towards Nagathali which is a viewpoint providing stunning views of the Ganesh Himal and Langtang Himalayan Range in a panoramic view. The hike from Tatopani to Nagathali is around 3 hours and we will be having our lunch at Nagathali enjoying the majestic views of the Himalayas. The Nagathali Viewpoint will be the highest elevation during our trek at 3170 M. After soaking in the views we will be descending down towards the village of Thuman which takes around 2 hours to reach from Nagathali. We will be staying in the village of Thuman.
The trek from Thuman to Bridim begins with a steep descent of around 2 hours until we reach a long suspension bridge over the Trishuli river after which we will be ascending towards the Bridim village. The trails from the suspension bridge to Bridim is quite confusing as the trekking trail and the motorway is merged at some places but we will be trekking through the trails as it is quite efficient than the motorway as well as we will be able to witness the scattered settlements of the local Tamang peoples on the routes. We will be staying at Bridim where we will be greeted with the spectacular views of the mighty Himalayas.
After enjoying the views of the Himalayas from Brdim at dawn we will be heading towards Syabrubesi after having a hearty breakfast. The trek from Bridim to Syabrubesi marks the end of the Tamang Heritage Trek with the Mountain Ram Adventures team. The trail from Bridim is a comfortable journey as we trek in the off road motorway. Along the way we will be passing through the village of Khangjim which is a small settlement with prayer flags surrounding some of the houses and tea houses. After a comfortable trek of 5 hours we will reach Syabrubesi where we will be spending the night.
As the trek is complete we will be heading towards the capital city, Kathmandu on a bus via the same scenic road along the midlands of Rasuwa district. The ride back will be enjoyable as we will be able to see the green lush vista complemented by the glimpses of the Himalayas beautifully. After reaching Kathmandu we will be transferring you to your designated hotel where you can freshen up and explore the vibrant city and even explore some of the remaining touristic sites including Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Basantapur Durbar Square and Changu Narayan Temple which are also listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites within the Kathmandu Valley. In the evening the Mountain Ram Adventures team will be hosting a farewell dinner and providing you with a certificate of accomplishment for completing the trek with the team, after the dinner take a well deserved rest.
As your Tamang Heritage trek is complete we will be dropping you off at the Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure after assisting you with your baggage and Check out procedures. The Tamang Heritage trail takes us to the lower regions of the Langtang National Park in the Rasuwa district situated in the Central North of Nepal at around 122 KM from the Capital city, Kathmandu. The trek commences and ends from the settlement of Syabrubesi, also known as the hotspot for most of the trekking routes of the Langtang Valley.
During the trek the trekkers will be trekking to an elevation of 3170 at Nagathali on the 3rd day of our trek from Tatopani to Thuman. Nagathali is a viewpoint from where the trekkers can enjoy the scenic panoramic views of the majestic peaks of Ganesh and Langtang Himalayan Range.
To participate in the trek the trekkers are required to have two permits which are the Langtang National Park Permit and the TIMS card (Trekking Information Management Card). If you are trekking with the Mountain Ram Adventures team then your permits are collected by the representatives before the commencement of the trek for a hassle free trek. If you are a solo trekker then you can get the permits at the Department of Immigration Nepal in Kathmandu, you can check the official website at Department of Immigration to get any updates.

To enjoy the trek the trekkers can trek in the trail either in a group or solo with a guide and porter (if required). Solo trekking is prohibited in Nepal and trekkers must be assisted by a licensed guide during their trek within protected areas as per the amendment of rules by the Government in 2023 AD. The trek can be enjoyed by both solo and group trekkers and depends upon the preference of the trekkers, here at the Mountain Ram Adventures we welcome solo and group trekkers with an open arm.
Even though the Travel insurance is not made compulsory for the trekkers to participate in any trekking routes of Nepal it is a must inorder to participate with the Mountain Ram Adventures team. The insurance plays a crucial role as a safety net to fall back during any emergencies which might arise during the trek. The Guides and porters can make quick decisions during any emergencies without any hesitation as it covers all or reduces the cost significantly including medical and evacuation fees.
Yes, drinking waters are available in the tea houses as well as scattered settlements of the locals along the trekking trail. The trekkers are required to carry a water bottle or a flask to carry water during the trek and fill it up at tea houses and settlements along the trail. The trekkers are suggested to not drink the water directly from taps or water body and consume it after filtering only.
The best season to trek in the Tamang Heritage Trail is during two seasons which are the Autumn season which begins from September and ends in November and the Spring season which begins in March and ends in May. During the Autumn and Spring season the weather is predictable and pleasant while providing stunning views of the surrounding Himalayas.
The Tamang Heritage trek is around 55-60 KM in total with five days of trekking averaging around 12 KM for around 5-6 hours per day. The trek is a relatively comfortable one and takes place within the midlands of the region. The trekkers are suggested to walk according to their pace as it can reduce fatigue and lets the trekker enjoy the majestic vista of the region.
9. Should I carry Altitude Sickness medicines like Diamox or Acetazolamide for the trek? We suggest the trekkers carry essential prescribed medications (if any) and some additional medicines related to altitude sickness but it is not compulsory as guides assigned to you by the Mountain Ram Adventures will be carrying a first aid box with medicines which may be required if any such emergencies arises during the trek.
The trip takes 10 days in total according to the itinerary designed by Mountain Ram Adventures including 5 days of trekking with additional 2 days required for travel to/from Syabrubesi (starting and ending point of the trek) and remaining 3 days are spend in the capital for sightseeing, planning the trip and international transfers.

Yes, the trekkers can experience the snowfall while trekking in the Tamang Heritage Trail mostly during the winter season which covers the month of December, January and February turning the settlements into a dreamy snowy wonderland. The trekkers can also experience snowfall during other seasons but the occurrence is quite rare and unpredictable.
Yes, the Mobile networks work in the trekking trail of the Tamang Heritage Trail. The trekkers must have a Nepali SIM of either NTC or NCell as both of the cells work equally as well. The signals might fluctuate at times giving unsteady connection but it is manageable. The signal will be weak while trekking through the trail and will be considerably good in settlement areas.
