The trek takes us through lush green forest of the midlands of Nepal providing us with stunning views of the snow capped peaks of the Langtang and Ganesh Himalayan Range.

The Tamang Heritage Trail is a short and comfortable trek in comparison to other mainstream trekking destinations within the Langtang Valley yet still providing stunning views of the High Himalayas. The trek takes us through the abundant green forest of the midlands of the valley covered in ancient rhododendron trees and wildflowers. We will be trekking mostly on the offbeat trails occasionally filled with stone steps (stairway) which merge with the off road motor ways in some parts of the trek. The trail is filled with scattered settlements of the indigenous local people of the Tamang community which is one of the main highlights of the trek.

The Tamang community of Nepal are the descendants of the Tibetan tribes who migrated to Nepal during the ancient time and settled in the Langtang region. The name Tamang comes from Tibetan words “Ta” which means horse and “Mak” which means warriors as during the ancient times they were intimidating warriors who fought battles while riding on their horses. The trek takes us through ancient settlements of the Tamang community built meticulously in traditional structures giving us an opportunity to witness the culture and lifestyle of the indigenous community from a close-up. Exploring the village of Gatlang which is one of the oldest settlements of the valley gives us an inside of the way of living of the locals, the trekkers can see the locals making clothes by traditional methods as well. During the visit to Gatlang Village the trekkers can also visit the ancient monastery and the Parbati Kunda which is at a hiking distance from Gatlang village.

To have a cultural experience the trekker can also visit during the Sonam Lhosar Festival which usually falls during the months of January or February during which the trekkers can experience the authentic rituals and traditions of the Tamang community.

Tamang Heritage trek during Autumn Season: During the months of September, October and November the trekkers can experience the Autumn Season while traveling to the Himalayas. Often regarded as the best season to trek in the Himalayan region the Autumn season offers the trekker favorable climate and trekking conditions during which the fluctuation of temperature is also not much with occasional fresh snowfalls which enhances the beauty of the trekking trail. During the Autumn season the clouds do not disrupt the magnificent views of the Himalayas giving the trekkers a chance to enjoy the spectacular views of the peaks of the Ganesh and Langtang Himalayan Range.

Tamang Heritage Trail during the Spring Season:  During the Spring season the trekkers can experience the true beauty of nature along with the stunning views of the Himalayan vista. During the months of March, April and May the lush green Rhododendron forest turns into a vibrant shade of Red as the flowers start to bloom increasing the beauty significantly. During the Spring season the trekking trail is also filled with the aromatic smell of the wild flowers boosting the appeal of the trekking trail. The weather during the spring season is also pleasant and does not fluctuate much making it a favorable time to trek. The views of the Himalayas are also stunning during the Spring season which is much more appealing to the trekkers.

Tamang Heritage Trail during off season(Monsoon/ Summer and Winter Season): Even though the trek can be done throughout the year the Summer/ Monsoon and Winter season are the least favorable time to trek in the Himalayas due to the unpredictability of the weather and other factors make it not a good time to trek. During the Monsoon/ Summer season the trail is muddy and slippery as well as problems of bugs also significantly increases with leeches being the main one. The views of the Majestic Himalayas are also hidden behind the thick layer of gloomy clouds which decreases the beauty of the trek significantly.

During the winter season the snow significantly increases the beauty turning the trail into a snowy paradise yet the weather is not favorable as the temperature will be at freezing levels most of the time and the route is usually covered in snow making it difficult to navigate through the trail. The trek can be easily done during the winter season with proper gear and warm clothes. The mountains will be hidden behind the thick layer of clouds preventing the trekkers from enjoying the majestic views. The winter season can be punishable at times if the trekkers are not prepared to face the harsh conditions of the Himalayas.

If you are planning to travel during the Sonam Lhosar make sure to stay at Gatlang Village as the locals celebrate the festival with rituals and pujas unique to their culture and travelers are allowed to witness it and also participate in the ceremony at times. Overall during the festival the trekkers can have a unique and authentic experience of the rituals and lifestyle of the Tamang community. We suggest the trekkers take a hot shower only if you deem it to be absolutely necessary.

Internet: The Internet facility is available in the tea houses along the trek but costs additional fee counted towards the personal expenses of the trekker. We suggest the trekker purchase data plan via network providers as it is much cheaper and also somewhat more reliable than Wi-Fi service in tea hoses as mobile data can be used while trekking as well depending on the signal.

Luggage: During the trip you can store your extra clothes at your designated hotel or leave it at the Mountain Ram Adventures office. Both of the options are safe and you can collect the luggages after completing your trek. If you decide to store your bag at the office on your return to the hotel after the trek we will bring the luggages to your designated room.

  13. Tipping the Guides and porters
During the trek the porters and guide assist you and make the trek comfortable and enjoyable. To show the appreciation towards the guides and porters for their hard work and assistance the trekkers usually provide them with handsome tips and gratuities. The amount of tips also depends upon the satisfaction level of the service provided by the guides and porters.

  14. Risk during trek
    Indigestion
During the trek trekkers are suggested to have a proper nutritious meal every time to fuel them for the journey as well as avoid the chances of indigestion. The trekkers are suggested to not drink water directly from the water source and drink only after filtering it properly. The trekkers are requested to inform of any medical conditions or allergies to the guides or group leader to avoid health complications.

    AMS
Even though the trek takes us at an elevation of 3165 M max the chances of getting altitude sickness is still slightly there so the trekkers are requested to inform the guides if they face any of the symptoms related to Acute Mountain Sickness.
