Upper Mustang Region During the Autumn Season: The Months of September to Early November is considered to be the best time to travel or trek in the Himalayan Region as the skies are clear with minimum disturbance obstructing the stunning views of the landscapes as well as to whether is quite pleasant and doesn't suddenly changes. As we will be going on a journey through the off road trails which are carved on the side of the high hills and mountains the risk of landslides is also there but during the season it is at its lowest as it rarely rains during the season making it much more preferable.

Upper Mustang During the Spring Season: Upper Mustang during the months of March, April and May is also considered to be one of the best times to travel. The weather of the Trans Himalayan region does not fluctuate much and during the season the lower region does not witness much rainfall which significantly decreases the risk of landslides in the travel trails. During the spring season the wild flowers as well as the Rhododendron flowers bloom in the lower region of the Road increasing the appeal of the trail significantly.

Upper Mustang Region during the Monsoon Season: In the Himalayan region the Monsoon and Summer Season can be experienced at the same time. The months of June, July and August are considered to be the riskiest time to travel in the Himalayas as we will be traveling through the off road trails carved on the mountain sides where the risk of landslides  is significantly high along  with the  risk of thunderstorms. During the monsoon season the views of the Himalayas are also mostly blocked by the monsoon clouds making the tour not much appealing. Overall the Monsoon/ Summer season is considered to be a very risky time to travel so travelers are suggested to travel in the Spring or Autumn season to have a memorable journey.

Upper Mustang during the Winter Season: The winter season turns the Himalayan Regions into a mystical winter snowland, even though the winter season offers stunning views of the Himalayan Vista covered mostly in snow it is considered risky time to travel and trek as the weather in the upper Mustang Region usually sits around freezing making it unbearable at times. The off road trails are also covered in snow making it much more difficult and riskier to navigate. Usually during the peak winter season the locals of the Lo Manthang region migrate to the lower altitude region as the temperature can be unbearable. During the Winter season the risk of Avalanches also significantly increases.

  9. Upper Mustang During the Tiji Festival:
The festival of Tiji is an ancient festival which dates back to the time of Guru Rinpoche also known as Padma Sambav. The word Tiji is derived from the word “Tenpa Chirim '' which means prayers and blessing for world peace. The festival is a 3 day long ceremony which marks the victory of Dorje Sonam over the demon Matam Ruta who turned out to be the father of Dorje Sonam. Matam Ruta is said to have troubled the villagers by bringing natural disasters like landslides, flood, storms, droughts and other calamities. Inorder to defeat his father Dorje Sonam had to dance 52 different magical dances wearing different masks. Now the festival of Tiji is celebrated to mark the good over evil.

The festival is celebrated at noon, usually beginning at around 1-2 PM for a total of 3 days. The festival is divided into three parts which are Tsa Chaam, Nga Chaam and Rha Chaam.

Tsa Chaam(First Day): On the First day of the festival the dance shows the victory of Dorje Sonam over his father who was a terrifying demon called Matam Ruta who was responsible for troubling the villagers by bringing natural calamities.

Nga Chaam: On the second day the monks of the Chhode Monastery perform the dance of Nga Chaam which represents Dorje Sonam sending the demon back to the Buddha realm.

Rha Chaam (Third Day): On the third day of the festival the monks perform the dance of Nga Chaam which signifies the end or defeat of evil by good marking the victory of peace. As the festival is at its final stage all the participants/ performers take the stage dancing as the music gets loud and also the sound of gunfire.

The festival of Tije usually falls in the month of May and  in the year 2025 AD the festival of Tije falls on 24th, 25th and 26th of May. If you are planning to travel to the Upper Mustang to witness the Tije festival the booking for the Upper Mustang Driving Tour with the Mountain Ram Adventures is open for 2025.

  10. Travel tips:
ATM’s: In the High Himalayan Region there are no ATMs available in the route so travelers are  requested to withdraw the required amount for personal expenses and emergency fund at Kathmandu or Pokhara. The ATMs charge a certain amount as fee per withdrawal which might become costly so the travelers are suggested to exchange their money in Money exchanges in the Thamel area make sure to check the daily exchange rate to get the best deal possible.

Laundry: During the trip the travelers are suggested to pack enough clothes for the entire trip as in the Himalayan region even though laundry services are available it is rather expensive and not as effective as the city areas, so we suggest the travelers to use the laundry services in either Pokhara or Kathmandu as it is effective and relatively cheaper as well.
