Detail About Manaslu Circuit Trek

The Manaslu circuit trek may be arduous, but the memories will last, a trail of beauty unsurpassed!

To have a raw trekking experience unbothered and not disturbed by the crowd of travelers, the Manaslu circuit makes a great option. You will be exploring a very remote side of the Himalayas that lacks the level of comfort offered in the famous trekking routes like Everest base camp and Annapurna base camp.

With epic sceneries, intimate encounters, ancient cultural roots, and exotic flora & fauna, the Manaslu circuit trek is a great adventure in the Himalayas of Nepal.

We, Mountain Ram Adventure, have weekly group departures during the spring and autumn seasons. Likewise, our private Manaslu circuit treks are also organized throughout the trekking seasons. You can join us on the Manaslu circuit trek 2024/2025 departures anytime, at your convenience.

Surrounded by the Annapurna range (8,091 m/26,545 ft) in the west and Ganesh Himal (7,422 m/24,350 ft) in the east, Mount Manaslu (8,163 m/26,763 ft) is the eighth-highest mountain in the world. And the Manaslu circuit trekking leads you closest to this majestic mountain.

From the steamy lowlands, the Manaslu circuit trail goes along the gorges of Budhi Gandaki to the snowbound Larkya La pass (5,160 m/16,929 ft), and in between them are picturesque villages, uplifting mountain landscapes, crystal clear rivers, and the enriching cultural heritage of the natives.

Manaslu circuit trek is known as the offbeat trek, which means the trail is strenuous and tricky. This trek is best for experienced trekkers who are well aware of the high altitude and the Himalayan trail. The terrain is steep and trodden.

Suspension bridges connect valleys and many parts of the trails. However, monsoon often washes the minor bridges, leaving trekkers to use semi-submerged rocks. Likewise, we may use micro cramps while descending from the Larkya La pass.

Traverse within the Manaslu Conservation Area

Established in 1998, the Manaslu Conservation Area protects the unique biodiversity, cultural legacy, and natural resources of the region. The conservation area is home to several endangered and rare species, including over 110 species of birds. Likewise, the Manaslu conservation area is also home to several endemic species like the Himalayan tahr, snow leopard, and red panda.

The local villages offer warm hospitality, a reminder of the kindness found in this wild place

The natives of the Manaslu region are very kind and helpful. Indigenous communities like Gurungs, Tamangs, and descendants of Tibetans reside along the way. Their lifestyle, beliefs, and traditions are very different from what we are used to in cities.

For them, rivers and mountains are the protectors where deities and spirits live. They coexist with nature and hold a strong bond with it. Do not forget, during the Manaslu circuit trek, you are visiting their home. So be respectful of their customs and beliefs.

Adventurous side hike to Pun Gyen Gompa, Manaslu Base Camp, and Birendra Lake

Pun Gyen Gompa is situated at 3,200 meters (10,499 ft) around Samagaun (3,520 m/11,548 ft). It is one of the important religious sites for the locals. The monastery is also known for its unique architecture, which is a blend of Tibetan and Nepalese styles. There are prayer halls, statues, scriptures, prayer flags, etc, in the monastery.

Birendra Lake is at 3,450 meters (11,319 ft). Surrounded by stunning Himalayan mountains and hills, the lake offers a beautiful view. Locals believe this lake was formed by the tears of a deity. The water is crystal clear with beautiful reflections of mountains on it.

Hiking to Manaslu base camp is a difficult option. The base camp is situated 4,740 meters (14,665 ft), and the route is difficult. Located in an excellent natural amphitheater, hikers get to witness the beauty of Mount Manaslu up close.

Cross Larkya La pass

Larkya La pass is the highest point of the Manaslu circuit trek 18 days. Upon reaching this point, the major ascending part ends, and you will begin descending to the ending point of the trail. Standing 5,160 meters (16,929 ft) from sea level, Larkya La is tough to navigate through because of the steep, slippery, and jagged route.

To cross the pass, we begin hiking before dawn breaks (4:00 AM). Walking early allows us to reach the top of the pass by 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM. We can avoid the strong wind and get off of the pass before the weather takes any unsuitable turn.

Get to see surreal views of some of the highest mountains in the world

The Manaslu circuit trek is a visual feast for trekkers. Hills, rivers, forests, mountains, waterfalls, valleys, gorges, and glaciers make the landscapes diverse and divine. Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m/26,763 ft), Himal Chuli (7,893 m.25,896 ft), Shringi Himal (7,083 m/23,238 ft), Ngadi Chuli (7,871 m/25,823 ft), Langpo (6,965 m/22,851 ft), Saula (6,235 m/20,456), and numerous others are seen throughout the trail.

You will be face to face with some of these towering mountains. Likewise, the views from the Larkya La pass and the viewpoints you hike during the Manaslu circuit trekking are outstanding.

Want to make the trip furthermore exciting? Add Tsum Valley to the itinerary

Tsum valley is a further extension of the Manaslu circuit trek. Part of the Manaslu region, the Tsum valley was opened in 2008 for foreign trekkers. The valley is home to Tsumbas, the indigenous community, and untouched by modernization.

The Tsum valley houses several ancient monasteries, including the Mu Gompa, Rachen Gompa, and Dephyudonma Gompa. Other natural wonders like Milarepa Cave, Chumling Hot Spring, etc also make the area quite fascinating.

If you have a few extra days in your hand, we highly recommend you extend the Manaslu circuit trek to Tsum valley.

Is the Manaslu Circuit trek worth doing?

Yes, the Manaslu circuit trek is worth doing because it is one of the best off-the-beaten treks in Nepal. Untouched by the crowd of travelers and well protected under restricted area regulations of the country, the Manaslu region offers an incredible trekking experience.

The trodden trails, breathtaking mountain views, serenity, and kind locals make Manaslu circuit trekking very charming. However, unlike the famous trekking routes in Nepal, the Manaslu circuit trek route is quite difficult and demanding.

The trekkers have to be strong physically and mentally to enjoy this trek to the fullest. As we hear, the best views come after the toughest walks. This phrase is meant for the Manaslu circuit trek.

Can I do the Manaslu Circuit trek without a guide?

No, you cannot do the Manaslu circuit trek without a guide. Manaslu region is a restricted area in Nepal, and foreigners are only allowed to enter the region with a licensed guide.

Not only that, but the trek also has to be organized by a registered local trekking company. Therefore, neither you can do the Manaslu circuit trek alone or with an independant guide.

Why is Manaslu Circuit a restricted area?

There are a handful of factors that make the Manaslu circuit a restricted area in Nepal. First, the Manaslu circuit trail touches more than six villages that are connected to the Tibetan border. Even some are only a few kilometers away from the border, which makes it very important for the Nepal government to maintain strict border security. Hence, the region has been declared a restricted area.

Secondly, the Manaslu region is very fragile. Modernization has not touched many villages and the tribes residing there. Their cultural heritage, traditions, and lifestyle are still the same to some extent. Likewise, the flora and fauna found in the Manaslu region are quite exotic. So, this is another reason to make it a restricted area.

And the last cause is to keep you safe while trekking. Manaslu circuit trail is no joke. There are avalanche areas, steep & rocky paths, sloppy uneven cliff sides, etc, that you have to cross while trekking. The Manaslu region is not well connected to other parts of the country or has proper health facilities. Therefore, trekking alone is not recommended at all, whether the region is bound by restricted area laws or not.

Manaslu Circuit location and its history

The Manaslu circuit trek in Nepal will take you to the eighth-highest mountain in the world, Mount Manaslu, in the Manaslu Conservation Area. It is a restricted part of Nepal.

The trek begins at the busy market of Soti Khola and ascends to Larkya La pass, at 5,160 m/16,929 ft, with side hikes to Pung Gyen Gompa (4,800 m/15,748 ft), Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m/15,748 ft), and Birendra Lake (3,691 m/12,109 ft).

Mount Manaslu is part of Mansiri Himal in the Nepalese Himalayas, located in the west-central part of Nepal. Manaslu is referred to as the mountain of the spirit, and the word is derived from the Sanskrit word manasa.

It means intellect and soul. 64 kilometers 940 miles) east of Mount Annapurna, Manaslu is one of the toughest mountains to climb in the Himalayas. However, the Manaslu circuit trekking route has made it possible for travelers to discover the pristine beauty of this region.

Manaslu Circuit trek distance & terrain

The Manaslu circuit trek covers approximately 177 kilometers. Every day is 6 to 7 hours of trekking, covering 10-20 kilometers on average. There are a few days when you walk for 4 to 5 hours as well. As per the Manaslu circuit itinerary you follow, these numbers can vary, but you can have a general outlook.

The Manaslu circuit terrain is offbeat. You will be following a mountainous track that is not well-made. The trek begins from sub-tropical forests and gradually goes uphill through rhododendron forests to junipers and bushes before joining meadows and further ascending to glaciers and a mountain pass.

Manaslu Circuit trek preparation

To prepare for the Manaslu circuit trek 18 days, we recommend you do strength training and cardio. You have to increase your stamina to walk 6 hours a day. So, regular walking with a 5 kg backpack on an uphill path will be great if you have access to it.

Other activities like running, jogging, swimming, and cycling will help you to increase stamina. And you can train your legs and core body strength in the gym.

Another preparation should include a visit to your doctor and understanding whether this journey is fine for your body or not. There is a risk of altitude sickness during the Manaslu circuit trek, so learn about it as well.

The most crucial thing is to get your trekking boots early and wear them before going on an actual trek. This will help you get used to the boots and prevent you from getting blisters while trekking.

How much money do I need for Manaslu Circuit Trek?

The Manaslu circuit trek price ranges between USD 1400 to USD 1800 and can go above. It is one of the most expensive treks in the Himalayas. The fees for the restricted area permit itself are costly. Likewise, your itinerary and services offered by your trekking company also determine the Manaslu circuit trek cost.

At Mountain Ram Adventure, we have the best Manaslu circuit trek price. Our trekking package includes everything that you'll need for a smooth trek. We do not charge any additional money, and the cost of our mentioned services is included in our Manaslu circuit trek package cost.

Accommodation on the Manaslu Circuit Trek

The Manaslu circuit trail is lined with tea houses. These are the most basic types of accommodation available in the Himalayas that offer a decent place to sleep and have meals. Teahouses are comfortable and affordable, which keeps the Manaslu circuit trek cost low if we compare it with the camping trek trekkers have to do because of the unavailability of accommodation back in the day.

You can expect western and Indian-style toilets. The washroom is mostly shared in the old teahouses, whereas newly built ones have private washrooms too. Both single rooms and twin-shared rooms are available. We will book the best teahouse in all the villages for your stay.

Food on the Manaslu Circuit Trek

Food is one of the vital parts of our Manaslu circuit trekking experience. It provides you the opportunity to try local cuisine and fuel up for the day's trek. We have meals, as per the menu of the teahouses that vary from traditional Nepali food to Tibetan and western dishes. Dal bhat, chow-mein, momo, thukpa, thenduk, Tibetan bread, omelets, pasta, pancakes, etc are some common foods.

Likewise, every teahouse gives boiled drinking water. You can refill your water bottle. Some places may charge you a few additional costs, so make sure to carry ample Nepali cash for these additional expenses that are not covered in our Manaslu circuit trek cost. Use a water purification tablet.

Transportation during Manaslu Circuit Trek

We have local transportation involved in the Manaslu circuit trek. We use a jeep to commute back and forth from the starting/ending point of the trek. The rides are offered as per our itinerary. Likewise, we also have free airport pick up and drop off service.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Permits

There are three main permits that trekkers need to obtain to do the Manaslu circuit trek. They are- the Manaslu Restricted Permit, the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). All these permit costs are included in our package cost.

Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP Permit): USD 30 per person
Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP Permit): USD 30 per person

Do you need a TIMS permit to trek to Manaslu Circuit?

No, you do not need a TIMS card for Manaslu circuit trekking. However, if you continue to trek from Dharapani to the Annapurna circuit, you will need a TIMS card.

Why do I need an Annapurna Conservation Area Project Permit for the Manaslu Trek?

After crossing Larkya La pass, we will descend to Bhimthang and enter Dharapani. The trail from Dharapani to Besisahar requires an Annapurna Conservation Area Project permit.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficulty

The Manaslu circuit trek remains one of the longest and most challenging treks in Nepal. The rugged and remote location of this trek, with brutal terrain and limited service providers along the trail, makes the Manaslu circuit trekking very demanding. You have to trek 6 hours a day minimum, covering 12 km to 15 km each day.

The unpredictable Himalayan weather and climate also make trekking difficult. Trekking through narrow cliffs and steep tracks requires fine focus, however the adding altitude may deviate you. Your endurance, stamina, and strength are very important. Manaslu circuit trek is not for weak people.

Best time to trek Manaslu Circuit

The Manaslu region has six climatic zones, and the temperature varies as per the climate zone. Winter is the most extreme time of the year as the climate gets very cold, and teahouses remain closed in the upper part of the trail.

And the summer/monsoon season is also not ideal for Manaslu trekking, given all the weather challenges. However, spring and autumn offer the perfect trekking condition, but the weather remains unpredictable throughout the year.

Manaslu Circuit Trek in Spring (March to May)

Spring season is the best time to do the Manaslu circuit trek. This season has a moderate climate and stable weather. The clear skies carry a vast panorama of the mountains. Temperature ranges between 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F) in the day and goes down to 5°C (41°F) at night. The blooming rhododendron forests in the lower part of the trail are the highlight of the Manaslu circuit trek in spring.

Manaslu Circuit Trek in Summer/Monsoon (June to August)

After spring comes the summer/monsoon season in Nepal, which is also considered an off-season for trekking in the Himalayas. We may do the Manaslu circuit trek in the summer/monsoon season, but the unpredictable weather, harsh climate, and other factors like rainfall, etc make the trek even more challenging.

During the day the temperature ranges from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), whereas at night, the temperature is around 10°C (50°F). The best part is that the greenery and vegetation are at their peak in this season.

Manaslu Circuit Trek in Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is the second best time for the Manaslu circuit trek 18 days. The climate again gets pleasant with stable weather as we transition to the winter season. October and November are also festive months. Nepalese celebrate their biggest festivals, like Dashain, Tihar, Chhat, etc, in autumn.

The temperature ranges between 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F) during the day and drops down to 0°C (32°F) at night. The nights are much cooler than the daytime. Similarly, the stunning fall colors and vegetation make the trails gorgeous.

Manaslu Circuit Trek in Winter (December to February)

Winter is another very challenging time to do Manaslu circuit trekking. The snowfall makes the trail slippery and even blocks some parts of the route. The Manaslu region is at high risk of avalanches during this season. Trekking in winter is possible but only with strong support and preparation.

The temperature ranges from 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F) during the day and goes down to -10°C (14°F). The best part of doing the Manaslu circuit trek in winter is the stunning snow-capped mountains. You will find yourself in a hidden winter wonderland.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Tips

  1. Internet: The internet facilities along the Manaslu circuit trail are not that great. You can carry a Nepali sim to use cellular data while trekking for a better internet experience. As the Manaslu region is very isolated, we do not recommend you get your hopes high. Some villages at the start of the trek may have WiFi service at some extra bucks.
  2. Hot Shower: You will get hot shower facilities in most of the villages before Larkya Phedi and after Bhimthang. The service will be paid, so do carry some additional money with you.
  3. Charging: Paid charging facilities are available in all lodges. The charging station is made in the reception or dining area. You can ask the lodge staff to charge, and he/she will help you with that. You can expect USD 2 as a service fee every time you charge your device.
  4. ATM: Manaslu circuit trekking route does not have an ATM. You have to withdraw money in Kathmandu to use during the trek. There are many ATMs in Thamel and around Kathmandu, so you will not have an issue finding one.
  5. Luggage: Any extra luggage you can leave at your hotel lockers room during trekking. We use strong duffel bags and daypacks at the time of the trek. Each trekker has a 10 kg weight limit for the duffel bag and a 5 kg weight limit for the day pack.

Travel Insurance for the Manaslu Circuit Trek

Travel insurance is required during the Manaslu circuit trek 18 days. You will need travel insurance to help you get out of the trail if any emergency situation occurs. Likewise, you can use travel insurance if you lose your baggage or your flights get canceled.

While buying travel insurance, make sure to include emergency air evacuation up to 6,000 meters with medical bills for the Manaslu circuit trek. You have to send us the documents of travel insurance and carry them with you before the trip starts.

Risks During Manaslu Circuit Trek

Manaslu circuit trek explores the remote and rugged land. There are no roadways, health facility, or any other basic infrastructure, which make this trekking route quite risky. If you get injured or sick, our guide will give you first aid.

If first-aid does not work and you need further medical assistance, then we have to air evacuate you to a hospital in Kathmandu. Likewise, the terrain is steep and slippery at times. You have to be very careful while trekking.

Stomach problems on the Manaslu Circuit trek

To stay away from stomach aches and indigestion, do not eat meat, as most of the time, they are frozen. Likewise, do not drink water from a stream or tap directly. You may not be able to digest it. Use water purification tablets to make sure your gut does not suffer.

Preventing Altitude Sickness (AMS) during the hike

Preventing altitude sickness during the Manaslu circuit trek does not demand any special care. You have to do a few simple things, and you can avoid it. Below we have mentioned some preventive measures for altitude sickness:

  1. drink plenty of water and other fluids
  2. maintain your pace and do not rush
  3. eat lots of food (dal bhat is the ideal meal)
  4. do not consume alcoholic drinks or smoke while gaining altitude
  5. get ample sleep

Personal Expenses

Our Manaslu circuit trek cost covers most of your base expenses like accommodation, three meals a day during trekking, permit fees, ground transportation as per the itinerary, and expenses of guides and porters.

We advise you to have a USD 10 to USD 15 budget for each day during your trip. You should also budget your shopping expenses and flight tickets.

However, there are a handful of countries that are not eligible for this provision, so please check your visa status before flying to Kathmandu.

If your country does not fall under the on-arrival visa category, you have to get it from the Nepalese Embassy or Consulate office in your home country.

Please note that Mountain Ram Adventure does not guarantee a tourist visa. We can only provide you with a trip confirmation letter that you can use to get the visa. If you fail to obtain a visa and the trip gets canceled or postponed, you have to bear the charges.

Laundry

You can get laundry service in your hotel room. It will cost you additional money for the service and is not covered in our Manaslu circuit trek package cost. Likewise, there are also other laundry services available in Thamel at a cheap price. You can do laundry for around USD 5 to USD 10.

During trekking, you will rarely get a chance to wash your clothes and dry them before another day starts and you set out to trek. Better carry trekking clothes that are breathable and can dry easily. Pack an extra pair of undies and store the used one in a dry bag to wash later after returning to Kathmandu.

Money Exchange

There are plenty of money exchange centers in Thamel. Check the updated exchange rate, and you can get your money exchanged easily at a low service charge. Similarly, you can also visit a bank and get your money exchanged.

One other way to get Nepali cash is by withdrawing from an ATM. All ATMs support international cards and let you withdraw money at a small charge.
