Why land at Kala Patthar instead of Everest Base Camp?

The Khumbu glacier is where the iconic Everest Base Camp is situated. However, during the peak seasons when mountaineers establish their tents for the summit push, the base camp may not have sufficient space for a helicopter landing. Additionally, the surrounding mountains obscure the view of Mt. Everest from EBC, making it impossible to see.

For a breathtaking view of Mt. Everest and the surrounding peaks, Kala Patthar is the place to be. Not only will you witness an awe-inspiring sunrise, but you'll also be standing above the clouds. Kala Patthar is located just a few hundred meters above Gorak Shep, making it the ideal landing spot.

Everest base camp helicopter tour (weight limit)

We have a weight limit of 500 kg for each helicopter for the EBC heli tour. Our helicopters can accommodate up to five people, excluding the pilot. For groups of three or fewer people, we provide a direct flight from Lukla to Everest Base Camp.

However, for groups of more than three people, we'll make a stop at Pheriche and add an extra chopper to the tour. This allows us to divide the weight and maintain a weight limit of 250 kg per helicopter, ensuring the safety of all passengers.

Do know that an additional cost is incurred for each extra helicopter added to the tour. However, we believe that the added cost is worth it to provide a safe and comfortable tour for our guests.

*Note: As per the rules, above 4,000 meters helicopters weighing up to 250 kg are only allowed to fly.

Conditions: Numbers/Kilograms

  1. Maximum 5 people in 1 helicopter
  2. Weight Limit for 5 people: Maximum 500 kilograms
  3. Weight Limit for 3 people: Maximum 250 kilograms
  4. Average recommended weight: 80 kilograms (per person)

However, please keep in mind that prices can vary greatly depending on the level of luxury and services you include in the package. Additionally, prices are subject to change as per the ongoing scenario.

Landing points during the Everest base camp helicopter tour

We have multiple landings during our Everest base camp helicopter tour. Our main landings are at Kala Patthar and Syangboche Airstrip. Apart from those two places, we also land at Lukla twice to refuel the chopper and Pheriche if we have to include an extra chopper to maintain the 250 kg weight limit from Pheriche onwards.

Lukla

Located in northeastern Nepal at an elevation of 2,860 meters (9,383 ft), the small Sherpa town of Lukla serves as the gateway to the Khumbu region, popularly known as the Everest region. One of the major highlights of this town is the Tenzing-Hillary Airport, which is renowned for being the starting point for all adventurous treks in the region, including the short Everest base camp trek and the Gokyo Lakes trek.

However, it's not just the treks that attract visitors to Lukla, the airport itself is a major draw. The Lukla airport's runway is short and steep, making it one of the most dangerous airports in the world. The excitement of landing and taking off from this airport is unmatched, making it a must-visit destination for thrill-seekers.

During the Kathmandu to Kala Patthar helicopter tour, we will make two stops at Lukla airport, at the beginning and the end of the trip, to refuel the aircraft. Passengers will have 10 to 15 minutes to refresh themselves and explore the airport before continuing their journey.

Pheriche

As we approach Pheriche during our Everest Base Camp helicopter tour, we will make a quick landing to pick up an extra chopper to maintain the 250 kg weight limit from Pheriche onwards. The landing site at Pheriche is at an elevation of 4,240 meters (13,911 ft). It is surrounded by stunning mountain views.

We will make this stop to ensure the safety of all passengers and maintain the overall helicopter weight limit for a smooth and safe journey ahead. While the stop will be brief, you will have the opportunity to soak in the picturesque views of the surrounding mountains before we take off again.

 Kala Patthar

Kala Patthar, also known as the black rock, is a famous vantage point situated in the Khumbu region. This majestic spot stands tall at an elevation of 5,544 meters (18,192 ft) on the south ridge of Mt. Pumori, just above Gorak Shep. Interestingly, Gorak Shep was the first base camp of Mt. Everest, which lies nearby. Trekkers usually climb Kala Patthar on their return from Everest Base Camp (EBC), as it offers a stunning sunrise and panoramic views of Everest and other mountains.

During our helicopter tour to Everest, if we cannot land at EBC, we will land at Kala Patthar instead. This spot offers better views of the mountains than the base camp itself, making it an incredible addition to the helicopter tour. Additionally, Kala Patthar is the highest altitude one can reach in the Himalayas without a climbing permit.

After landing at Kala Patthar, you will have approximately 5 to 10 minutes to marvel at the breathtaking beauty and take photographs. Due to the high altitude and thin air, we cannot stay there longer than 10 minutes as it could make you vulnerable to altitude sickness. Remember that while the view from Kala Patthar is mesmerizing, it's crucial to prioritize your health and safety while enjoying the tour.

Syangboche Airstrip

Situated above Namche Bazar at an altitude of 3,780 meters (12,402 ft), the Syangboche airstrip is the second closest airstrip to Everest Base Camp. This airstrip is primarily used by travelers who intend to visit the nearby hotel.

With a short runway length of 405 meters (1,329 ft), it is not licensed for commercial operations and is only open to private flights from Kathmandu or Lukla. It takes around 7 to 11 minutes to reach Syangboche Airstrip from Lukla.

Despite its small size, Syangboche Airstrip offers spectacular mountain views. During our Everest scenic flight, we will land at Syangboche airstrip and then proceed to hike to the Everest View Hotel. The hotel is located at an altitude of 3,962 meters (13,000 ft). It is famous for offering panoramic views of Mount Everest (8,849 m/29,032 ft), Ama Dablam (6,812 m/22,349 ft), and Lhotse (8,516 m/27,940 ft).

This hotel is the perfect spot to take a break, grab a hot cup of coffee and some warm food, and soak in the majestic views of the mountains before flying back to Lukla. And when can you get another chance to have breakfast in the Himalayas?

Everest View Hotel

Perched at a staggering altitude of 3,962 m (13,000 ft), the Everest View Hotel is one of the highest hotels in the world. Established in 1971, this hotel was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2004 for its lofty location. The hotel offers a luxurious stay and world-class service at this altitude, making it an unforgettable experience for its guests.

During our Everest base camp helicopter tour, we will take you to this magnificent hotel for a sumptuous breakfast. You can relish the breakfast of your choice with a breathtaking mountain panorama as the backdrop. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Everest View Hotel is that you can witness the majestic Mt. Everest from all of its windows.

Whether you prefer a freshly brewed cup of coffee, a refreshing glass of juice, or a fancy glass of champagne, the Everest View Hotel will make your short stay an unforgettable one. The hospitality and warmth of the hotel staff will leave you with a lasting impression of the Khumbu region.
