Potala Palace: Potala Palace is one of the most iconic landmarks of Lhasa, Tibet enlisted among the UNESCO World Heritage site. The beautiful monument sits on top of the Marpo Ri Hill which is at an elevation of 3700 M. The palace was built during the 7th century AD during the reign of King Songtsen Gampo but was brought to its current form by Lobsang Gyatso, the fifth Dalai Lama during the 17th century. The historical monument used to serve as the winter residence of the Dalai Lama up to the exile of the 14th Dalai Lama in 1959 AD. The Palace is divided into two parts: the White palace which served as the residence of the Dalai Lama and also housed the administrative house. The Red Palace used to serve as the area for religious study and the burial chapels of the past Dalai Lamas. The Palace holds some of the most iconic murals, statues and relics significant to Tibetan Buddhism.

Jokhang Temple: Jokhang Temple is also enlisted among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites located at the center of the city of Lhasa and is considered to be the most sacred and revered site for Buddhism in Tibet. The monument was erected in 642 CE during the reign of King Songtsen Gampo along with his two wives: Princess Bhirkuti from Nepal and Princess Wangchen from China. The monument is believed to have been established inorder to cement Buddhism as the primary Religion of Tibet. The monument dedicated to Jowo Shakyamuni/ Jowo Rinpoche is a life-size statue believed to be brought by Princess Wangchen from China. The monument is now considered to be one of the most revered relics in Tibetan Buddhism as it is believed to be blessed by Lord Buddha himself and attracting thousands of visitors traveling for pilgrimage. During the Cultural revolution of 1960’s the Temple was immensely damaged as significant monuments and relics were looted and destroyed. However the temple has gone through an intricate restoration. The temple is also renowned for the “Lhasa Jokhang Circuit” which is a sacred path around the temple followed for pilgrimage walks.

Drepung Monastery: Drepung Monastery is situated around 7 KM from the capital of Tibet, Lhasa and is one of the largest and historically significant monasteries in Tibet and is also an UNESCO World Heritage Site under the part of “Historical Ensemble of the Potala Palace”. The Monastery was founded in 1416 AD by Jamyang Choge Tashi Palden who was a disciple of the famous Tibetan saint Je Tsongkhapa. “Drepung” means “head of rice” idolizing the vast number of monks living there and the huge area of the Monastery. The Monastery is a part of the Gelung Tradition led by the Dalai Lamas and is the school of Tibetan Buddhism. At its prime the Monastery hosted around ten thousand monks at a single time making it the biggest institution in Tibet. The Monastery was also greatly damaged during the Chinese Cultural Revolution as many historical and religious relics were stolen and many monks were oppressed during that time. The Monastery has since gone through an intensive restoration project however the huge influence of the monument has diminished by quite a lot.

Sera Monastery: Sera Monastery is situated at the outskirts of Lhasa,Tibet around 5 KM and is one of the major three great Tibetan Schools of Gelung at the foot of Pharping Mountain and was found in 1419 AD by Jamchen Chojey a disciple of Tsongkhapa. The name Sera comes from the wild rose(Sera) which used to be found in that area. The Sera Monastery housed around 5000 monks during its prime but the number has been significantly decreasing. The Monastery was renowned for the debate sessions during which the monks used to engage in debate to hone their understanding of Buddhism and still to this day many visitors and scholars travel to the Monastery for this specific reason.  The temple reflects the authentic Tibetan Design through its beautiful and grand halls, chapels and residential quarters used by the monks for their stay.  A beautiful statue of Buddha can also be seen at the Sera Je (the central temple). The Sera Monastery was gravely destroyed during the Chinese invasion in Tibet during the 1950’s but the monastery went through restoration by the help of international Buddhist communities and the Tibetan communities.
