Meals during the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

There is no limit on options for food in Kathmandu and Pokhara. However, during the Annapurna base camp trekking, the menu gets limited. Fortunately, the Annapurna base camp trek route is very famous, and so many tea houses have opened and elevated over the years, making meal choices quite extensive.

As you may have heard, dal bhat is the staple meal during any trek in the Himalayas. It is served with your choice of veggies and curries, along with some other sides like papad, salad, achar, etc. Likewise, momo, noodles, thukpa, thenduk, Tibetan bread, soup, porridge, sandwich, pasta, burgers, eggs, etc are also quite common.

Transportation

The Annapurna base camp trek begins from Nayapul. To reach the starting point of the trek, we have to drive for 6 to 7 hours to Pokhara from Kathmandu and then another couple of hours from Pokhara to Nayapul. We use a tourist standard bus to travel to Pokhara from Kathmandu and a comfortable jeep to drive to Nayapul.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek Difficulty

Annapurna base camp has moderate trek difficulty. With a little preparation, anyone can do this 14 days trek with us. And the best part is you do not have to be an experienced trekker to do Annapurna base camp trekking. The trail definitely is not easy. The constant ascends and descends on mountainous terrain will exhaust you. You need good strength and endurance to push through the day.

The trek begins from rice fields and dense forests and goes to alpine meadows and gorges. Above the Himalaya Hotel, the terrain is steep and rugged. You will trek by the rocky trail of Machhapuchhre base camp and walk on the glacier to reach the Annapurna base camp.

As the trail goes above 2,500 meters, you will begin to take long breaths. By the time you reach ABC, the elevation will go above 4,000 meters. This increase in altitude can trigger altitude sickness, so you have to make sure you are well-acclimated.

Best time to trek to Annapurna Base Camp

The weather and climate are unpredictable throughout the year in the Himalayas. Among all the four seasons- spring, summer/monsoon, autumn, and winter, two seasons have somewhat stable weather and mild climate conditions, which make trekking perfect. These two seasons are spring and autumn, known as the best time to trek to Annapurna base camp.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek in Spring

Spring covers the months of March, April, and May in the Himalayas. This season of flowers makes the Annapurna base camp trekking route utterly beautiful. The teeming vegetation and all the different species of rhododendron decorate the entire trail. As the snow starts to melt, the rivers and streams are rushing with cold water.

The clear sky offers majestic mountain views. The temperature ranges from 4C to 14C in the daytime and 0C to -8C in the nights/mornings. You will neither feel too hot nor too cold trekking. The precipitation chances are low, making the trek quite enjoyable.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek in Summer/Monsoon

Summer/monsoon season (June to August) goes hand in hand in Nepal. There can be days when no rain is seen for a week & more, but the hot and humid climate makes it almost impossible to be out of the house, especially in the lower part of the country. Annapurna base camp trek in summer is possible but with lots of preparation and caution.

With our experience, we do not recommend Annapurna base camp trekking this season because of the muddy and slippery trail. There are risks of landslides and bugs that make the trail even more demanding. However, if you love flora and fauna, then this is the best time to be on the trail. The temperature ranges from 3C to 19C.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek in Autumn

The October to November months of autumn are another fantastic time of the year to do the Annapurna base camp trek. Autumn is another season with stable weather and a mild climate. The fading colors of the Annapurna base camp trail make the venture dreamy.

The clear sky with comforting warmth and freshness in the chilly air will rejuvenate you. The views are unobstructed. Locals welcome their biggest festivals in autumn, making the season even more special and exciting. The temperature ranges from -6C to 20C.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek in Winter

Winter makes Annapurna base camp trekking a bit difficult, and some parts of the trail may get very tricky because of the thick snowfall. Winter is an offseason for the Annapurna base camp trek, and therefore, there is no crowd on the trail.

The weather is unstable, and the temperature goes down below -20C at night. However, winter is also one of the heavenly times to do this trek if you do mind a bit of difficulty. The views are the best in the winter season. Everything gets frozen, and the trail is nothing less than a winter wonderland.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek Tips

  • Internet: The internet facility on the Annapurna base camp trail is fine. Wifi is available in many lodges and teahouses. You can pay USD 2 to USD 5 to use the internet for an hour. Likewise, we recommend you get a tourist sim and use data to surf the internet for a better experience. The network connection and speed will not be the same as in the city, but you will get ample opportunity to get connected with your family and friends.
  • Hot Shower: Hot showers are a luxury in the Himalayas, and you have to pay a few extra bucks for the service. Hot showers are easily available at a lower altitude than at a higher altitude. Carry a dry towel and toiletries to use during the shower.
  • Charging: Lodges have separate charging areas. It is also a paid service. You can charge your devices throughout the trail. Spare batteries, solar charges, and power banks will save you good money.
  • ATM: There is no ATM on the Annapurna base camp trek route. Your last chance to withdraw Nepali cash to use during the trek is in Pokhara. The trek involves mundane personal expenses like WiFi, hot showers, charging, etc, so carry some money on you to use these services.
  • Luggage: The duffel bag weight limit is 10 kg, and the day pack weight limit is 5 kg per trekker. We will arrange a locker room for you to store any other luggage in Kathmandu while trekking is free of cost.

Tipping the porter and guide on ABC
Tipping the porter and guide on the ABC (Annapurna Base Camp) trek is an essential aspect of trekking in Nepal. It is customary to show appreciation by giving them a tip at the end of the trek.

The amount of the tip is usually based on the length of the trek and the number of porters and guides involved. As a general rule, the recommended amount for tipping a porter is around 10% of the total trekking cost, while the guide may receive around 15%. However, the actual amount can vary depending on the quality of service provided and the satisfaction of the trekker.

Hi Ram I would just like to say, that I really enjoyed the trek and thought that RAMESH was excellent as guide both his personality and attention to detail. I thought that the porter KUMEL was such a hard worker and so polite.\\ Both are excellent workers. I hope in maybe November 2017, yes 2017, will come back and use your company again to do the 12 day Everest Base Camp that I partially completed in 2011 Take care Regards,

"12 day trek with Ram save my life"
We did a 12 day trek, getting close as possible to base camp. Flying in from no altitude and climbing/ trekking soon after landing, not advisable! Luckily Ram recognized my symptoms of altitude sickness, he told me to drop my gear and run DOWN as fast and low as possible. Ran to save my life like never before, vomitted, but maintained consciousness. Ram was close by, had recovery plan, the rest was history. We had a great journey, nonetheless. Thanks for your experience, professionalism and fun, caring mannerism. Great communicater, organiser, and now friend. Donna & Anton of Brisbane, Oz.
